24,250 Indian techies fired at 84 startups to date

Techies continue to face the brunt of the economic slowdown as startups have laid off 24,250 employees to date.

The said number of employees have been fired from 84 startups, IANS reported citing data from startup coverage portal Inc42.

Digital healthcare platform Practo has fired 41 employees, mostly engineers, as part of the company's continuous performance management and planning process. Dunzo, Homegrown quick-grocery delivery provider, has reduced 30 per cent of its workforce (nearly 300 employees) despite raising $75 million funding in a fresh funding round.

Bengaluru-based ZestMoney and FanClash, the homegrown fantasy e-sports startup, have laid off 20 per cent of its workforce (nearly 100 employees) and about 75 per cent of its workforce, respectively, the report said.

The startup laid off about 100 employees in three rounds and the fired employees received a two-month salary as a severance package. Also, home interiors and renovation platform Livspace recently laid off at least 100 employees as part of cost-cutting measures.

Dukaan, SaaS platform for online stores, sacked nearly 30 per cent of its workforce (60 employees) which happens to be the second layoff in nearly six months.

Healthcare unicorn Pristyn Care sacked about 350 employees across departments.

In March, Gaurav Munjal, Co-Founder and CEO of Unacademy, said that it was reducing 12 per cent or more than 350 employees to "meet the goals we are chasing in the current realities we face".

According to the report, BYJU'S, Ola, OYO, Meesho, MPL, LivSpace, Innovaccer, Udaan, Unacademy and Vedantu are some of the companies that have reduced its workforce.
