2025: A Landmark Year of National Milestones, Operational Excellence and Passenger-Centric Growth

Calendar Year 2025 stands out as a historic and transformative year for Western Railway, marked by nationally significant milestones, record infrastructure achievements, exceptional operational performance and a sustained focus on passenger safety, service quality, digital governance, revenue growth and sustainability. Throughout the year, Western Railway demonstrated its ability to balance scale with precision, legacy with modernisation and growth with discipline.

NATIONAL MILESTONES & HISTORIC FIRSTS

One of the most defining achievements of the year was Western Railway attaining 100% electrification of its entire Broad Gauge network, firmly positioning the zone among the fully electrified railway networks of Indian Railways and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable, energy-efficient operations.

A flagship achievement was the completion and dedication of the Loco Manufacturing Shop at Rolling Stock Workshop, Dahod, built at a project cost of ₹21,405 crore. The foundation stone for this facility was laid by the Hon'ble Prime Minister and the project was completed in 2025. The state-of-the-art unit is designed to manufacture 9000 HP electric freight locomotives, enhancing Indian Railways' freight hauling capacity and reducing logistics costs. The facility supports the "Make in India" and "Make for the World" initiatives, producing Broad Gauge electric locomotives for Indian Railways and Standard Gauge electric locomotives for export. Built on green manufacturing principles and powered by green energy, the project has generated significant direct and indirect employment and provided a strong impetus to the economic development of the Dahod region.

During the year, Western Railway completed 234 km of new lines, doubling and gauge conversion works, significantly enhancing network capacity, operational flexibility and resilience. A major technological milestone was achieved with the commissioning of India's first 2×25 kV traction system on the Khachrod-Nagda double-line section of Ratlam Division under MISSION RAFTAAR, enabling higher speeds, improved energy efficiency and future-ready traction infrastructure.

INFRASTRUCTURE EXPANSION & SAFETY WORKS - TRANSFORMING CONNECTIVITY, LOGISTICS & REGIONAL GROWTH

Western Railway sustained large-scale infrastructure strengthening during 2025, delivering significant safety and capacity enhancements. A total of 138 Road Over Bridges and Under Bridges were constructed, 114 manned level crossings were eliminated and 660 km of W-beam fencing was installed, resulting in a substantial improvement in passenger safety and operational efficiency.

During 2025, Western Railway executed a series of high-impact doubling, gauge conversion and electrification projects, significantly strengthening passenger mobility, freight capacity and regional economic development across Gujarat. Key projects included the doubling of the Anand-Godhra rail line (79 km, ₹693 crore) covering Anand, Kheda and Panchmahal districts; doubling of the Mahesana-Palanpur rail line (65.10 km, ₹537 crore) covering Banaskantha, Patan and Mahesana districts, as the last remaining single-line gap on the Delhi-Ahmedabad Rajdhani route; doubling of the Rajkot-Hadmatiya section (39 km, ₹377 crore) as part of the Rajkot-Kanalus Doubling Project (111 km) covering Rajkot district; gauge conversion with electrification of the Kalol-Kadi-Katosan Road rail line (37 km, ₹347 crore) covering Gandhinagar and Mahesana districts; gauge conversion of the Becharaji-Ranuj rail line (40 km, ₹520 crore) covering the aspirational districts of Mahesana, Patan and Ahmedabad in alignment with the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan; and electrification of the Sabarmati-Botad rail line (106 km, ₹333 crore), which enabled 100% electrification of the rail network in Gujarat.

Collectively, these projects have eliminated network bottlenecks, reduced congestion and train detention, significantly cut journey times on critical corridors, enhanced operational flexibility and enabled introduction of additional passenger and freight services. The infrastructure augmentation has strengthened multimodal logistics, reduced transportation costs, improved supply-chain efficiency and supported automobile, industrial, agricultural and manufacturing sectors, while also facilitating eco-friendly rail operations, regional development, employment generation and improved access to major urban centres such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Dwarka and Bhavnagar.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE & PUNCTUALITY LEADERSHIP

Western Railway recorded exceptional punctuality performance during 2025, remaining among the best-performing Zonal Railways in Indian Railways. Punctuality of Mail/Express remained at the highest levels across the system, including almost 97% punctuality in November 2025 and about 96% cumulative punctuality up to November, the best among all Zonal Railways.

This performance was achieved despite heavy monsoon conditions, extremely dense suburban operations, large-scale festival special train services and ongoing infrastructure works, underscoring WR's strong operational planning, real-time monitoring and disciplined control mechanisms.

MUMBAI SUBURBAN NETWORK - INDIA'S LIFELINE

Western Railway's Mumbai Suburban network once again proved its resilience and reliability, continuing to serve as Mumbai's lifeline, catering to over 30 lakh passengers daily. Despite intense rainfall episodes during the monsoon, suburban services remained largely uninterrupted due to meticulous pre-monsoon planning, asset preparedness and rapid response systems.

MAJOR PASSENGER SERVICE ADDITIONS & MANAGING PEAK DEMAND

Passenger connectivity received a significant boost during 2025 through the introduction of new regular services as well as extensive special train operations to meet growing and seasonal travel demand.

A key highlight was the inauguration of the Amrit Bharat Express between Udhna Junction (Gujarat) and Brahmapur (Odisha), marking Western Railway's and Gujarat's first Amrit Bharat Express and strengthening affordable long-distance connectivity between western India and the eastern coast.

In addition, new MEMU services were introduced to enhance regional mobility. A new Bhavnagar-Ayodhya train service, flagged off by the Hon'ble Minister of Railways, Electronics and Information Technology and Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw further expanded long-distance connectivity for pilgrims and passengers.
To effectively manage peak travel demand and supplement regular services, Western Railway ran a total of about 7000 trips of Holiday special trains during the year 2025, operated across multiple phases covering summer rush, Ganpati, Diwali-Chhath and Christmas/New Year etc., Extra coaches on temporary and permanent basis too were added to the trains. These special train services played a crucial role in ensuring smooth, safe and convenient passenger movement across the network.

Western Railway undertook intensive and meticulously planned crowd management measures during periods of exceptionally high passenger turnout across suburban and long-distance services. Despite unprecedented passenger volumes during peak hours, festival seasons and special traffic periods, passenger movement remained smooth, orderly and safe due to proactive planning, deployment of additional manpower, real-time monitoring, regulated passenger flow, enhanced announcement systems and close coordination among various railway departments. These comprehensive arrangements ensured safe dispersal of crowds, prevention of congestion and uninterrupted train operations, reinforcing Western Railway's ability to manage high-density passenger traffic with efficiency and precision.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION & SMART GOVERNANCE

The year 2025 marked a decisive leap in digital governance for Western Railway. The zone launched SUGAMRAIL, a first-of-its-kind software based platform for real-time monitoring of lifts, escalators and earthing pits. The digital tracking of lift and escalators performance ensures faster attention to breakdowns.

Further enhancing passenger experience through digital innovation, Western Railway commissioned a Digital Lounge and co-working space at Mumbai Central, providing a modern, comfortable and productive travel environment aligned with evolving passenger expectations.

Western Railway also achieved 100% digital ticket checking with the deployment of 2,270 Hand-Held Terminals (HHTs). WR retained its No.1 position in Rail Madad grievance redressal for the fifth consecutive year.

FREIGHT SECTOR

WR also achieved several freight-sector firsts, including the first-ever dedicated refrigerated (Reefer) container rake from MHPL-Sanand to Pipavav Port and first-time loading of two deemed VP rakes from Linch to Sankrail Goods Terminal, highlighting diversification in logistics services.

STRENGTHENING OUR SECURITY MEASURES

Owing to the alertness, swift response and courageous efforts of Western Railway RPF personnel, 37 precious lives were saved under Operation Jeevan Raksha.

Demonstrating compassion and commitment towards child safety, 769 runaway/missing children were rescued under Operation Nanhe Farishtey and safely reunited with their families during the year.

Under Operation Amanat, RPF of Western Railway retrieved and returned left-behind passenger belongings worth over ₹11.66 crore to over 5000 passengers after due verification.

HEALTHCARE EXCELLENCE & EMPLOYEE WELFARE

Western Railway achieved major milestones in healthcare during the year. Divisional Railway Hospital, Rajkot, became the first hospital in Indian Railways to receive NABL accreditation for Medical Entry-Level Testing (MELT), followed by NABL accreditation for pathology laboratories at Rajkot, Badhwar Park, Sabarmati and Valsad.

A historic medical milestone was achieved with Indian Railways' first-ever Awake Craniotomy successfully performed at Jagjivan Ram Hospital, Mumbai Central. A state-of-the-art CT and MRI Scan Centre with a 3-Tesla MRI has been commissioned, significantly enhancing medical services.

SUSTAINABILITY & GREEN INITIATIVES

Environmental sustainability remains a core focus area. With 100% electrification, adoption of open-access green power, solar initiatives and water recycling plants, Western Railway significantly reduced its carbon footprint. Rajkot station was awarded ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Environmental Management System, reflecting WR's commitment to sustainable station management.

WR achieved 98 "Eat Right" certifications, the highest on Indian Railways, covering stations, hospitals, staff canteens and running rooms.

HERITAGE, INCLUSION & PUBLIC OUTREACH

In 2025, Western Railway strengthened its focus on heritage conservation, inclusivity and public engagement through a range of landmark initiatives. The Bandra Station Mahotsav was celebrated with great enthusiasm to showcase the rich heritage, architectural legacy and public connect of the iconic Bandra suburban railway station, a Grade-I heritage structure and one of Mumbai's most prominent railway landmarks. Built in 1888, the heritage station was highlighted through cultural programmes, heritage exhibitions, creative competitions and community-centric activities, reinforcing Western Railway's commitment to preserving railway heritage while fostering passenger and community participation.

During the year, Ratlam station buidling entered its Centenary Year, completing 100 years of service, which was commemorated through heritage-focused and public outreach initiatives celebrating its pivotal role in the evolution of Indian Railways.

Western Railway also advanced women empowerment and inclusivity, including deployment of the first All-Women TRD maintenance team, along with RPF initiatives such as Meri Saheli. Public outreach programmes such as "Rail ki Dhadkan" and the launch of Indian Railways' first podcast channel by Western Railway strengthened passenger connect and public engagement.

Western Railway has secured a significant accomplishment by winning a total of seven Shields under the 'Ati Vishisht Rail Seva Puraskar' for outstanding performance in various fields.

BOOST TO SPORTS

Western Railway athletes have brought great pride to the nation and the organisation through their outstanding international achievements in 2025. Ms. Antim Panghal won gold medals at the International Women's Wrestling Tournament 2025 held in Mongolia and at the tournament in Budapest. Additionally, India clinched the title at the 2nd Women's Kabaddi World Cup held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with Ms. Sonali Shingte of Western Railway delivering an impressive performance as the team's right raider, playing a key role in India's victory.

With 100% electrification, punctuality leadership, record infrastructure creation, strong financial performance, digital transformation and a people-first approach, 2025 stands as a landmark year in Western Railway's journey. The achievements of the year reaffirm Western Railway's position as a national benchmark in railway operations, while laying a strong, resilient foundation for future growth and innovation.
