Wrestlers Protest
The first major event to hit headlines in 2023 was top wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, joining a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, calling for action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations.

2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes
On 6 February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western It was followed by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, causing widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities.

Manish Sisodia Arrested
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was arrested on February by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after he was questioned for about nine hours in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped liquor policy in the national capital.

BJP Wins Northeast
The BJP successfully retained its iron grip on the northeastern states in the March assembly elections, by winning both Tripura and Nagaland. In Meghalaya, BJP went solo this time and managed to win 5 seats.

Rahul Gandhi Disqualified
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was on Friday disqualified from Lok Sabha following his conviction by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case.

Atiq Ahmad Shot Dead
Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction in April while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.

Amritpal Singh Arrested
Radical preacher Amritpal Singh was arrested from Punjab's Moga in April. Singh had been on the run since March 18 when a police crackdown was launched against him and his outfit 'Waris Punjab De'.

Congress Dethrones BJP In Karnataka
The Congress returned to power on its own in Karnataka after 10 years, knocking the BJP off its only southern perch. It emerged victorious in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly polls by winning 135 seats.

Manipur Violence
In a shocking incident, two women were stripped and paraded naked on May 4. A video of the incident came to light on July 19. This incident hogged global headlines.

New Parliament Building
Prime Minister Narendra on May 28 inaugurated the new Parliament building. It was a mega-event, in which many took part.

Odisha Train Accident
A horrific train accident in Balasore district in Odisha on June 2. The incident took the lives of 296. The accident occurred when 22 compartments of the Coromandel Express derailed following a collision with a stationary goods train. Three of the derailed coaches were propelled onto adjacent tracks, colliding with some compartments of the Bengaluru-Howrah superfast express.

Opposition Bloc Formed
To take on the mighty BJP, the like-minded parties united and formed a bloc called INDIA in July. So far, four meetings have been held, but the union of 28 parties is yet to announce the PM candidate.

Chandrayaan
In a giant leap for its space programme, India's Moon mission Chandrayaan-3 touched down on the lunar south pole in August, propelling the country to an exclusive club of four and making it the first country to land on the uncharted surface.

With this touchdown on the Moon to script history after a flawless 41-day voyage and less than a week after a Russian lander headed to the lunar south pole crashed, India has become the fourth country to master the technology of soft-landing on the Moon after the US, China and the erstwhile Soviet Union

G20 Summit
India successfully hosted the G20 Summit in September. The top leaders of the world attended the event.

Gaza Attack
Hamas launched the operation Al-Aqsa Storm' by firing thousands of rockets into Israel on October 7. Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters infiltrated Israel by land, sea and air. The war has not ended yet.

India Loses World Cup Final
After winning 11 matches in a row, the Men in Blue lost the World Cup final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in 2023. This was one of major upsets in the sports.

Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse
41 construction workers were trapped in an under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district after it collapsed on November 12. The challenging rescue operation concluded on 16th day after pulling out all the trapped workers.

BJP Wins Heartland
The BJP emerged victorious in the Hindi heartland by winning Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. However, the Congress came to power in Telangana, ending the nearly 10-year rule of the BRS.

Parliament Security Breach
In a shocking incident, two youths jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow gas from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by the MPs on December 13. The incidents came on a day when the nation is observing the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack.
