Wrestlers' protest: 2 FIRs against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

The Delhi Police on Friday filed two cases against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations made by the country's top wrestlers.

2 FIRs against WFI chief against SC notice

"The first FIR pertains to allegations levelled by a minor victim, registered under the POCSO Act along with relevant IPC sections concerning outraging of modesty. The second FIR is registered for carrying out comprehensive investigations into the complaints tendered by other, adult complainants under relevant sections pertaining to outraging of modesty," Pranav Tayal, DCP, told ANI.

The FIRs have been registered at the Connaught Place police station.

This development comes hours after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi Police, told a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that a case will be registered on Friday.

As the senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the wrestlers, raised safety concerns over the minor girl and the victim of the sexual assault, the apex court directed the Delhi Police to give adequate security to her.

"Bearing in mind the content which has been placed on record, we direct the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to make an assessment of the threat perception and provide adequate security to the minor girl involved," the bench said in its order.

Also, the court instructed the authorities to file an affidavit before it on or before May 5 (the next date of hearing) over the steps taken for the security of the minor girl.

The wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar since Sunday demanding action against the BJP MP who has been the WFI chief since 2012.

Although the top wrestlers welcomed the court's order saying it is "the first step towards victory", they said that the agitation will continue till Brij Brijbhushan Sharan Singh is stripped of all positions he holds.

"We don't trust Delhi police, they took 6 days to register an FIR. We'll see what they do. We are adamant on our stand to imprison the WFI President. I appeal to the Prime Minister of India to remove the WFI president from all his responsibilities.

This is related to all the sports and I'd urge them to come out in our support and I want to stay in touch with all of them. This is when you safeguard the future of sports and athletes in the country. All the renowned sports people should come out and support us and save Indian sports. If they don't come out today, they'll never be able to safeguard India's sporting culture," Vinesh Phogat said at the press conference.
