13 Dead, 40 Injured In Andhra Pradesh Train Accident; Know The Top Developments

In an incident that unfolded on the Howrah-Chennai rail line in Andhra Pradesh yesterday, 29th October evening, thirteen individuals lost their lives, while forty others sustained injuries when two passenger trains met with a catastrophic collision.

The accident occurred in the Vizianagaram district as one passenger train overshot the signal and collided with another from behind.

  1. The mishap took place between two passenger trains on the Howrah-Chennai line last evening, 29th October, causing a cascade effect in Vizianagaram district. In the aftermath, the rail authorities had to cancel eighteen train services and divert twenty-two others, causing considerable disruption.
  2. The calamity unfolded when a special passenger train, traveling between Visakhapatnam and Palasa, came to a sudden halt on the tracks between Alamanda and Kantakapalle due to a signal-related issue. It was at this vulnerable moment that the Vizag-Raigad passenger train collided with the stranded train from behind, leading to the derailment of three coaches.
  3. As per media reports, railways sources quickly identified human error as the root cause of the tragedy. It was reported that the signal was not noticed by the locomotive pilot. Disturbing images from the accident site showed the derailed coaches and concerned onlookers. Aside from the derailed and affected coaches, the site was cleared by midnight as per Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
  4. All the forty injured individuals were residents of Andhra Pradesh, and four of them are in critical condition, according to updates from the Vizianagaram District administration. The confirmation of the thirteen casualties came from Vizianagaram Collector Nagalakshmi, who provided the information today morning.
  5. In response to the catastrophe, the railway minister announced a financial aid package for the affected families. Those who lost their loved ones in the accident will receive ₹10 lakh in compensation. Passengers who suffered severe injuries will receive ₹2.5 lakh, while those with minor injuries will be provided with ₹50,000 as per instructions by Ashwini Vaishnaw.
  6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, deeply moved by the tragedy, reviewed the situation and extended his condolences to the grieving families. He also pledged an additional ₹2 lakh in assistance for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.
  7. The railway minister also reached out to Chief Minister YSR Jagan Mohan Reddy, who expressed profound sorrow and shock over the accident. He promptly ordered all necessary arrangements to ensure the prompt and effective treatment of the injured and requested regular updates on the incident's progress.
  8. As per railway sources, the war room in the Delhi railway ministry has been actively monitoring the situation, according to a report in NDTV. The East Coast Railway has set up helpline numbers for those in need, such as Bhubaneswar (0674-2301625, 2301525, 2303069) and Waltair (0891-2885914).
  9. Divisional Railway Manager Saurabh Prasad, who visited the accident site, mentioned that the final death toll would be determined after the coaches are thoroughly inspected. He assured the public that the process of separating the entangled coaches is underway, and a clearer picture will emerge once that task is completed.
  10. This grim incident is a haunting reminder of a similar tragedy that occurred just five months prior, when a horrific collision involving three trains in Odisha claimed the lives of over 280 passengers. The Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and a goods train were involved in the accident on 2nd June near the Bahanaga Bazar station.
