Hyderabad, Jul 24: Twenty-five children were killedafter a train rammed into a schoolbus at an unmanned railway crossing at Chegunta in Telangana's Medak district today.

The bus was carrying 40 children of the Kakatiya school in the district, 100 kilometers away from Hyderabad. The bus was at the crossing at Masaipet village when the incident happened. According to eyewitnesses, the driver did not listen to the local people who warned him of a train coming.

After the collision, the bus was dragged for some distance. Schoolbags and bottles were scattered by the wreckage of the bus, even as rescue workers tried to pull out children. According to police officer Ravi Nallamala, children between the age of 7 to 14 have been injured in the accident and hospitalized.

The incident has led to agitations among the local people who claimed that they have been asking for gates to secure the railway crossings.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao is said to have ordered an inquiry and is believed to be on his way to the site.
