10th Cheetah Dies At Kuno National Park In A Year

Another cheetah brought from Namibia in September 2022, died on Tuesday at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The cheetah was named as Shaurya. This marks the seventh adult cheetah and three cubs born in India to have died since March 2023. Sharing the sad news, the director of the project responsible for cheetah relocation stated that the exact cause of Shaurya's death could only be determined after the autopsy test.

"Today, on January 16, 2024, around 3:17 PM, Namibian Cheetah Shaurya passed away. Around 11 AM, incoordination and staggering gait were observed by the tracking team following which the animal was tranquilized and weakness was found," the official statement reads.

"Following this, the animal was revived but complications arose post-revival and the animal failed to respond to CPR. Cause of death can be ascertained after post mortem," said the statement by the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Director, Lion Project.

The program was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Under the government's project to rejuvenate the Kuno National Park, 20 cheetahs were relocated from Namibia and South Africa in two batches. The first batch came in September 2022 and the second in February 2023.
