Groundbreaking E-Commerce Platform Makes DNA Sequencing Technology Accessible to Emerging Markets
In a highly regulated and rapidly evolving life sciences landscape, customer relationship management (CRM) systems must be more than digital address books; they must become intelligent, integrated ecosystems that connect product, pricing, and service into one cohesive experience. The biotech and genomics sectors, in particular, demand platforms that go beyond traditional CRM use cases to enable refined contract lifecycle management, intelligent order processing, and robust service delivery, even in remote or low-infrastructure regions.

At the forefront of this transformation is Pavan Devarashetty, an enterprise architect whose work at Illumina has redefined CRM implementation in the genomics industry. As the lead architect for the DCP CRM project, he orchestrated cross-platform integration between Salesforce, SAP, and Elastic Path, thus creating a frictionless environment where sales representatives, service agents, and end-users could seamlessly collaborate.
"The idea," Pavan explains, "was to break down silos. When your CRM talks to your ERP and e-commerce layers in real-time, the customer experience improves dramatically and so does the bottom line."
One of the project's hallmark achievements was the integration of Apptus Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM), which allowed contracts to be initiated in Salesforce, pricing and discount data to be dynamically fetched from SAP, and finalized records to be synchronized back maintaining a single source of truth.
His architectural blueprint ensured that quote-to-cash processes became nearly instantaneous, replacing what were once disjointed, error-prone manual operations. Real-time synchronization reduced pricing mismatches and data entry errors, while CRM data accuracy saw a substantial improvement.
The integration enabled a faster sales cycle and contributed an estimated $3-5 million annually in added value through increased sales efficiency. Perhaps even more transformative was the enablement of remote ordering for DNA sequencing machines through Elastic Path.
"This wasn't just about convenience, it was about accessibility," he notes. "By allowing institutions in geographically distant or underserved areas to place orders online, we supported not just business goals but a broader scientific mission."
His expertise has extended across several other critical initiatives. He led the development of SAP Fiori-based pricing and order tracking applications that introduced intelligent workflows for internal approval processes.
These innovations were not without their challenges. Integrating SAP, Salesforce, and Elastic Path required extensive middleware logic and data validation protocols. He engineered orchestration layers to guarantee data consistency, even in high-throughput, distributed scenarios.
"One of the hardest parts was mapping how contracts initiated in Salesforce would be enriched by SAP pricing engines and returned back into a coherent, unified flow," he says. The successful implementation of this framework was a first-of-its-kind effort at Illumina.
His insights into CRM design extend beyond the technical. With a background in optimizing supply chain and pricing operations, Pavan has authored multiple scholarly and technical papers including "Optimizing Pricing Structures with SAP" and "Empowering Field Service Agents through Offline SAP Access".
His thought leadership reflects a philosophy rooted in customer-centric architecture. "CRM must evolve into a composable architecture, built on micro-services and augmented with AI to guide reps in real-time," he explains. "We're moving into an era where predictive pricing, smart contract negotiation, and integrated fulfillment will define competitive advantage in biotech."
Looking ahead, he envisions CRM systems becoming even more decentralized and intelligent. Offline-capable tools will play a greater role, especially in clinical and field settings where connectivity is inconsistent. Meanwhile, customer portals powered by platforms like Elastic Path will become standard in B2B transactions, especially in healthcare and life sciences, where buyers increasingly expect consumer-grade digital experiences.
Through his work, Pavan Devarashetty has not only modernized enterprise CRM architecture at one of the world's leading biotech firms, he's also redefined what's possible when digital ecosystems are truly connected. By building systems that are fast, accurate, and accessible, he continues to bring science closer to the people and the data closer to decision-makers.
