Why Has Section 144 Been Imposed in Hyderabad? Reasons Behind The Prohibitory Orders

Hyderabad City Police have imposed Section 144 across the city, effective from 6 PM on October 27 until November 28, as a preventive measure to curb potential disturbances from planned protests by various organizations and political groups. This directive, issued by Commissioner C.V. Anand, follows intelligence reports suggesting possible unrest that could disrupt public order, especially around sensitive areas such as the Secretariat.

Some reports suggested that a prominent political leader was planning large-scale protests and marches toward government establishments over a specific policy. The restrictions, effective until November 28, are solely aimed at maintaining public order and have no connection to curbing festival celebrations.

Sec 144 imposed in Hyderabad

Under Section 144, public gatherings of five or more individuals are strictly prohibited. This includes rallies, processions, public meetings, and displays of symbols or slogans that could incite discord. The police have designated Indira Park Dharna Chowk as the sole location for peaceful protests and dharnas, permitting demonstrations within a regulated framework. However, exceptions to the order include police and military personnel on duty, funeral processions, and specific cases authorized by competent authorities.

The implications of Section 144 are significant, especially for residents and visitors who may experience limited public activities. In addition to gatherings, restrictions include bans on processions, displays, and carrying weapons or objects that could potentially be used as weapons in gatherings. Violators will face strict legal action under relevant laws, reinforcing the authorities' commitment to maintaining peace and security.

Hyderabad has seen similar enforcement of Section 144 during sensitive times, such as elections or major political developments, where public safety becomes a top priority. Law enforcement has emphasized the need for public cooperation with these restrictions to foster a peaceful environment during the next month.
