Telangana School Holidays 2025: Will It Be 9-Day Sankranti Holiday This Time?
Schools and colleges in Hyderabad and Telangana are set to enjoy a nine-day break in January, incorporating a blend of regular, optional, and national holidays. This extended hiatus not only includes four Sundays but also embraces traditional and cultural celebrations, offering students a rich tapestry of leisure and cultural immersion. Amidst these days off, the inclusion of four Sundays adds a layer of extended rest and opportunities for personal activities or family time.

The calendar for January is marked by four general holidays, highlighting significant cultural and national events. These are the commencement of the New Year on January 1, followed by Bhogi on January 13, and the festive celebrations of Sankranti/Pongal on January 14. Additionally, Republic Day on January 26, a pivotal national celebration, although this year it coincided with a Sunday, rendering it a usual day off for students rather than an extra holiday.
Optional Holidays Offer Cultural Flexibility
Interestingly, January offers three optional holidays which include Hazrat Ali's birthday on January 14, Kanuma on January 15, and Shab-e-Meraj on January 25. These optional holidays provide flexibility, allowing schools, particularly those serving minority communities, to observe significant cultural or religious events. For instance, most minority community schools observe a holiday on Shab-e-Meraj. However, it's noteworthy that not all schools in Telangana close during these optional holidays, indicating a tailored approach to holiday observance that respects the diverse cultural fabric of the region.
The overlap of Hazrat Ali's birthday with Sankranti/Pongal on January 14 illustrates the complexity and diversity of India's cultural and religious calendar. While the former is recognized as an optional holiday, Sankranti/Pongal is accorded the status of a general holiday, reflecting its widespread celebration across the state.
In a broader perspective, the government's annual calendar solidifies these dates, ensuring that all schools and colleges across Hyderabad and Telangana align with the designated holidays.
Moreover, the academic calendar for the year 2024-25 specifies that the Sankranti holidays will span from January 12 to 17, totaling six days. This period not only allows for academic planning but also ensures that students can partake in Sankranti celebrations, a key festival in the region, without academic interruptions.
