Telangana Heatwave Alert: IMD Warns Temperatures May Touch 44°C Across State Till May 20

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert across Telangana as the state braces for an intense heatwave expected to continue until May 20. Temperatures in several districts are likely to hover between 41 and 44 degrees Celsius, prompting health authorities to warn residents about the rising risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

IMD Warns Of Severe Heatwave Across Telangana

According to the IMD, all districts in Telangana are expected to experience extremely hot and dry weather conditions over the next few days. The orange alert signals a high possibility of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable groups such as infants, senior citizens, and people suffering from chronic illnesses.

The prolonged spell of high temperatures has also raised concerns among public health authorities, who have advised residents to remain cautious during peak daytime hours.

Health Department Issues Heatwave Advisory

To reduce the risk of heat-related complications, the Director of Public Health (DPH) released a detailed advisory urging people to avoid stepping outdoors during the afternoon when temperatures remain at their highest.

The advisory strongly recommended wearing light cotton clothing and staying hydrated throughout the day. Officials advised citizens to consume sufficient amounts of water, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), and traditional cooling fluids to prevent dehydration.

Authorities also stressed the importance of taking immediate medical attention in case of symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, nausea, or excessive sweating.

Vulnerable Groups Asked To Take Extra Precautions

Health officials highlighted that children, elderly individuals, outdoor workers, and people with existing medical conditions face a greater risk during severe heatwave conditions. Residents have been advised to avoid strenuous physical activities under direct sunlight and ensure proper ventilation indoors.

People have also been encouraged to check on family members and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat conditions.

Meteorological officials indicated that dry weather conditions are expected to persist across Telangana over the coming days, with daytime temperatures remaining significantly above normal levels.

The ongoing heatwave has added to concerns over public health and daily outdoor activities, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation closely while urging citizens to follow safety guidelines until weather conditions improve.
