Hyderabad To Get 6-Lane Tunnel Under Begumpet Airport Runway After AAI Approval

Hyderabad is set to see a major infrastructure upgrade after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) approved the construction of an underground underpass beneath the Begumpet Airport runway. The proposed six-lane tunnel will form a key part of a larger elevated corridor project aimed at improving connectivity between Paradise Junction and Military Dairy Farm Road on NH-44.

Hyderabad's Begumpet Airport runway will feature a 600-metre, six-lane underground underpass approved by AAI, part of HMDA's 5.4-km elevated corridor connecting Paradise Junction to Military Dairy Farm Road on NH-44. This Rs 5,106 crore project is funded by the New Development Bank and the state government.

600-Metre Tunnel Planned Under Begumpet Airport Runway

The approved plan includes a 600-metre-long underpass tunnel with six lanes, to be built directly beneath the runway at Begumpet Airport. The tunnel is part of the 5.4-km elevated corridor that will connect Paradise Junction to Military Dairy Farm Road.

According to the project layout, the corridor will pass through key stretches including Secunderabad, Tadbund and Bowenpally, before terminating at Dairy Farm Road. Officials have opted for an underground structure in this section because constructing an elevated corridor close to the airport runway is not considered feasible.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) also confirmed the approval in an official update.

"The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has conveyed its approval for the construction of an underground underpass beneath the Begumpet Airport runway," HMDA said in its official communication.

Underpass Design Chosen To Ease Alignment Challenges

Apart from addressing aviation-related construction restrictions, the tunnel design is also expected to improve road alignment in the area. Authorities said the underground option will help avoid sharp turns along the Tadbund stretch, making the corridor more efficient and safer for traffic movement.

The Begumpet Airport underpass is being developed as a crucial segment of the Paradise to Dairy Farm Road corridor, one of the two major connectivity projects currently being executed by HMDA.

In addition to this route, HMDA is also working on another major corridor from Paradise Junction to Shamirpet, both of which are expected to strengthen road infrastructure in and around Hyderabad.

Land Acquisition To Cover Defence And Private Parcels

Land acquisition remains a major component of the project. For the Paradise to Dairy Farm Road corridor, authorities will require 42 acres of defence land and 13 acres of private land.

Taken together, the two major corridors being developed by HMDA, namely Paradise Junction to Shamirpet and Paradise Junction to Dairy Farm Road, will involve the acquisition of 114 acres of defence land and 78 acres of private land in total.

This highlights the scale of the proposed urban transport expansion and the level of coordination needed across departments for execution.

Rs 5,106 Crore Project To Be Backed By New Development Bank

The project will be financed through support from the New Development Bank (NDB), with the funding split between the international lender and the state government.

As per the preliminary project proposal report, the total project cost is estimated at Rs 5,106 crore. Out of this, the NDB will provide Rs 3,574 crore, while the state government will contribute the remaining Rs 1,532 crore.

Once completed, the corridor and underpass are expected to significantly improve connectivity in northern parts of Hyderabad, particularly along the busy stretch linking Paradise with Dairy Farm Road and surrounding areas.
