Hyderabad To Amaravati In 70 Minutes? Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Unveils Bullet Train Vision

Union minister for electronics and information technology and railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious transport and infrastructure vision with Hyderabad positioned as a major hub in the proposed southern India bullet train network, saying the high-speed corridor could dramatically cut travel times and reshape economic activity across the region.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a southern India bullet train network vision positioning Hyderabad as a key hub, with travel from Amaravati estimated at 70 minutes; the South Coast Railway Zone will be notified on June 1, 2026.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, Vaishnaw said the proposed bullet train system will link Amaravati with Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai, with Hyderabad emerging as one of the key anchors in what he described as a future high-speed growth grid for the south.

Hyderabad at the centre of South India's bullet train push

Framing the project as a game-changer for regional integration, Vaishnaw said the proposed Amaravati-Hyderabad high-speed stretch could reduce travel time between the two cities to just 70 minutes, a move that would significantly boost business mobility, investment access and inter-city economic ties.

"The bullet train, the dream project for all of us. And as you are aware, if you have seen the videos of the progress of Ahmedabad to Mumbai bullet train, that 500 kilometer stretch will be completed in one hour and 57 minutes. So basically, Mumbai, Surat, Vapi, Baroda, Ahmedabad, all those large cities will become one single economic zone, one single economic region. That same magic will now happen in Andhra also, Amravati to Hyderabad in 70 minutes".

With Hyderabad also expected to connect onward to Bengaluru and Pune in sharply reduced timeframes, the city could become one of the most strategically placed nodes in the proposed network, strengthening its role as a business, tech and transit gateway in southern India.

Minister calls it a 'high-speed diamond' for the South

Vaishnaw described the planned corridor as a "high-speed diamond" for southern India, suggesting that multiple major metros and emerging urban centres could be tied together through fast intercity rail.

Under the proposed network, the estimated travel times shared by the minister are:

  • Amaravati to Hyderabad: 70 minutes
  • Amaravati to Chennai: 112 minutes
  • Hyderabad to Pune: 1 hour 55 minutes
  • Pune to Mumbai: 48 minutes
  • Chennai to Bengaluru: 73 minutes
  • Hyderabad to Bengaluru: 2 hours 8 minutes

The Hyderabad routes stand out in particular, as the city is expected to benefit from faster direct access to both Amaravati and Bengaluru, potentially expanding commuter, corporate and logistics possibilities across state borders.

Big rail boost for Andhra, with spillover impact on Hyderabad region

Beyond the bullet train announcement, Vaishnaw said the long-pending South Coast Railway Zone will be officially notified on June 1, 2026, fulfilling a key commitment tied to state reorganisation.

He also announced plans to expand the Kolkata-Chennai double railway line into a four-line corridor, a major eastern rail capacity upgrade that is expected to accommodate nearly 500 additional trains for both freight and passenger movement. The expanded corridor is likely to improve broader connectivity across the eastern coast, while also supporting access to ports, tourism circuits and cultural destinations.

On railway funding, the minister highlighted the sharp rise in allocations. He said that while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together once received Rs 886 crore, Andhra Pradesh alone is now getting Rs 10,134 crore.

He further said that projects worth more than Rs 1,06,000 crore are currently under implementation in Andhra Pradesh, and 74 railway stations are being redeveloped under a wider station modernisation programme.

Digital infrastructure push adds to South's growth story

Vaishnaw also used the Visakhapatnam event to push for stronger domestic technology manufacturing, especially as data and AI infrastructure expands in the country.

He urged businesses, including data centre operators, to manufacture servers in India and align with the India AI mission, while also stressing that rapid digital growth must be backed by sustainable infrastructure practices.

According to the minister, areas such as power efficiency, lower water usage, recycling and wastewater utilisation must become central to future data infrastructure planning.

Taken together, the rail and digital announcements signal a broader effort to deepen southern India's economic integration, with Hyderabad likely to play a central role if the proposed bullet train grid moves from vision to execution.
