Hyderabad Rail Network Set for Major Boost as Railways Sanctions Rs 285 Crore Project

Indian Railways has sanctioned a major infrastructure upgrade on a crucial railway section passing through Hyderabad, aimed at enhancing train operations, improving freight movement and strengthening capacity on one of South Central Railway's important routes.

The project involves upgrading the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a more advanced 2×25 kV electric traction system on the Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section. The work will be executed across nearly 141 route kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs 285.01 crore.

Advanced Traction System to Boost Rail Operations

The approved project is part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to increase capacity and improve efficiency on heavily used rail corridors across the country. By replacing the current traction setup with a modern 2×25 kV electric traction system, railway authorities aim to ensure a more reliable and stable power supply for train services.

Officials expect the upgraded system to support smoother operations while improving overall safety, reliability and operational efficiency across the section.

Important Link in High-Density Rail Network

The Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal route is a vital segment of Indian Railways' High-Density Network (HDN). It forms part of the extensive Dharmavaram-Dhone-Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal-Mudkhed-Indore-Ajmer rail corridor, which handles significant passenger and freight traffic.

Given its strategic importance, the corridor plays a crucial role in connecting southern and northern parts of the country while supporting the movement of goods and passengers.

Freight Capacity and Speed Expected to Improve

Railway officials believe the traction system upgrade will significantly enhance the route's operational capabilities once completed. The project is expected to facilitate faster and more efficient train movements while increasing the carrying capacity for freight services.

With improved power distribution and reduced operational constraints, the corridor is likely to witness better train handling capabilities, helping Indian Railways meet growing transportation demands in the region.
