Hyderabad's New Initiative Appoints 44 Transgenders As Traffic Assistants

Hyderabad has made a significant stride towards inclusivity by appointing 44 transgenders as traffic assistants. This innovative move came after 58 candidates showcased their physical capabilities in events such as running, long jump, and shot put at the Goshamahal Police Ground. Out of those selected, 29 identify as female transgenders and 15 as male. This initiative marks a historic moment for both the community and the city's approach to diversity and representation within its workforce.

The selection process was executed in line with directives from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who had previously mandated the recruitment of transgenders into the Hyderabad Traffic Police Department. This directive was followed by a series of consultations and meetings among key officials, including Anitha Ramachandran, Commissioner of the Women and Child Welfare Department, Ravi Gupta, Principal Secretary of the Home Department, and C. V. Anand, Commissioner of Police Hyderabad. These discussions culminated in the successful organisation of the physical events, aimed at identifying suitable candidates for the role of traffic assistants.

During the recruitment event, Police Commissioner C. V. Anand addressed the newly appointed traffic assistants, urging them to become role models within their community. He emphasized the importance of their contribution to enhancing the reputation of both the Hyderabad Police and the Telangana State Police Department. This recruitment initiative is not just about filling vacancies but is a profound statement on social acceptance and the breaking down of barriers within the community.

The criteria for selection were clearly outlined, ensuring that candidates were above 18 and below 40 years of age, Indian citizens, and holders of an SSC pass. Additionally, they were required to possess a personal identity card issued by the District Magistrate and be local residents within the Hyderabad Commissionerate's jurisdiction. This meticulous selection process reflects the seriousness with which the authorities approached this groundbreaking initiative.

The Chief Minister had also envisioned the broader role transgenders could play in traffic management across Hyderabad. He proposed that their deployment in managing busy intersections and assisting in 'drunk and drive' checks could significantly improve traffic discipline and safety. Furthermore, he highlighted the need for a special dress code for the transgenders, equating their salaries to those of Home Guards, and providing them with adequate training to ensure they are well-prepared for their new roles.

This initiative is seen as a step towards not only providing a source of income for the transgender community but also elevating their status within society. By integrating them into public service roles, the authorities are acknowledging their potential to contribute meaningfully to the city's welfare. The move has been widely praised as a progressive step forward in recognizing and embracing the diversity of the city's population.
