BRS Leader K Kavitha Arrested In Delhi Liquor Policy Case

Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLC K Kavitha was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Friday following raids by Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate officials at her Hyderabad home. According to reports, the searches were linked to the Delhi excise policy case, where Kavitha is named as an accused. Despite receiving multiple notices from IT and ED to record her statement, she had challenged these notices in the Supreme Court and refrained from appearing before the agencies.

ED's chargesheet alleges that Kavitha, daughter of BRS chief and former CM K Chandrashekar Rao, was part of the 'South group' involved in paying Rs 100 crore in kickbacks to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for undue benefits under the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. Kavitha has refuted these allegations, referring to the ED notices as "Modi notices."

In a turn of events, a CBI team recorded Kavitha's statement at her Hyderabad residence on December 1, 2022, in connection with the same case, lasting over seven hours. Following this, on December 2, 2022, the CBI issued a notice to her under CrPC section 160, summoning her to join the probe on December 6 regarding alleged corruption in the Delhi government's withdrawn excise policy.

After her party's defeat to the Congress in the November 2023 elections, Kavitha, 46, faced criticism for failing to address the concerns of turmeric farmers demanding a turmeric board to regulate prices. This allowed the BJP to make gains in Telangana, leading to her defeat in the 2019 elections.

Despite these challenges, Kavitha remains active in public service, having founded Telangana Jagruthi in 2006 to promote Telangana's culture, traditions, and festivals. She has also denied all allegations related to the liquor scam.
