Big Boost For Hyderabad Connectivity As Centre Approves Survey For Regional Ring Rail Project

The proposed Regional Ring Rail project around Hyderabad has moved a step closer, with the Union government approving a survey for the ambitious rail corridor. The project is expected to improve transport connectivity between Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road (ORR), the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR), and surrounding districts, laying the groundwork for a larger regional mobility network.

Survey cleared as first step towards DPR

The approval for the survey was conveyed by Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu in a written reply dated March 6 to Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy. The survey will act as the preliminary stage for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which is essential before the project can move into the next phase.

Officials are currently working on the broad alignment of the proposed railway line and are expected to keep it largely along the Regional Ring Road corridor. At the same time, the final route is being worked out in consultation with the Telangana government.

Kiran Kumar Reddy described the development as a significant breakthrough for the long-discussed rail connectivity proposal around Hyderabad. He said the survey would help authorities prepare the DPR for the proposed network and noted that the alignment is likely to run along the Regional Ring Road stretch.

Centre to move ahead only after DPR and consultations

While the survey approval is an important milestone, the Union government has made it clear that the project will progress further only after the DPR is completed. Once the report is ready, the Centre will begin consultations with all key stakeholders, including the Telangana government, before taking the proposal to the next stage.

According to Ravneet Singh Bittu, the project will then be sent for appraisal to NITI Aayog and the Union finance ministry. Only after those clearances and evaluations will the Centre consider granting formal approval to the Regional Ring Rail project.

This means the survey is currently the starting point, but multiple administrative and financial approvals still remain before construction can be formally sanctioned.

Issue raised in Lok Sabha under Rule 377

The update from the railway ministry came in response to an issue raised by Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377. The MP had sought clarity on the status of the proposed rail corridor, which has been seen as a crucial infrastructure requirement for the fast-expanding Hyderabad region.

The written reply from the ministry has now confirmed that the project has entered the survey stage, giving it an official push from the Centre for the first time.

Project may transform transport links around Hyderabad

If the Regional Ring Rail takes shape, it is expected to substantially strengthen connectivity between districts surrounding Hyderabad and create a more integrated transport network beyond the city core. The proposed corridor could also help improve access between major road infrastructure projects, including the ORR and RRR, while easing movement for passengers and potentially supporting freight activity in the future.

Apart from mobility benefits, the project is also being seen as a possible driver of regional development. Leaders backing the plan believe better rail connectivity around Hyderabad could support economic growth, improve access to emerging growth corridors, and encourage development in outlying districts.
