The horrific Nagrota attack which was carried out on November 29 2016 was the handiwork of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, the National Investigation Agency has said. The attack was significant in a lot of ways.

Afzal Guru

The Valley had been infested with the terrorists from the Hizbul Mujahideen. With the agencies getting wind of their operations, Pakistan had decided that it would need to launch both the Jaish and Lashkar-e-Tayiba in a big way.

Attacks in Uri and Pathankot had made it clear that Pakistan wanted its terror groups to focus entirely on Army installations in India. The brief was to avoid targeting civilians and go after the Indian Army. The attack at Pathankot was in fact the start of a major proxy war against India.

Through these attacks, the Jaish in particular wanted to immortalise Afzal Guru as well. Following the attack a note hailing Afzal Guru was found at the spot. A similar occurrence was noticed in a Kabul attack and also the one at Uri. The note that mentioned the name of Afzal Guru at the attack site was indication that the Jaish wants to rake up this issue yet again.

Sources say that this was an intentional effort to immortalise Afzal Guru as Burhan Wani following his death had gained immensely in terms of popularity. Seniors in the Jaish or Hizbul Mujahideen would like to immortalise Afzal Guru instead of Wani. They feel that Afzal Guru was a real champion of the Kashmir cause when compared to Wani who was nothing but a social media star.

The terrorist attack at the Army camp at Nagrota occurred on the 29th of November 2016 in which seven army personnel were martyred and three others were injured. Three Pakistani terrorists were killed in the operation and a huge quantity of fire arms, ammunition, explosives and other articles were recovered from the slain terrorists.

Preliminary interrogation of the arrested accused Syed Muneer revealed that the attack was carried out by the Jaish-e-Mohammad, a banned terror group, in furtherance of a well planned conspiracy from Pakistan.

The accused revealed that he along with other valley based JeM operatives were in touch with the JeM leadership in Pakistan and had received a freshly infiltrated group of three Pakistani terrorists from the Samba sector a day before the attack. They subsequently stayed at a hotel in Jammu and then left the attackers at Nagrota outside the Army camp late at night and proceeded to the Kashmir valley.

Intelligence Bureau sources say that the efforts to rake up Afzal Guru would not stop. The Jaish in particular would continue to raise this issue as he was part of their team which carried out the attack on Parliament. In the days to come the Jaish would also try and carry out recruitments in the name of Afzal Guru, the IB officer also said.
