What Is 'Boysober', New Viral Relationship Trend Getting Popular Among Gen-Z?
Dating trends are constantly evolving. Initially, friends would set up dates for each other.
With the rise of social media and dating apps, connecting with more people has become easier.
Online dating is now a staple of modern romance, introducing terms like fizzling and masterdating.

Gen Z is at the forefront of the current dating scene, bringing new trends into the spotlight. One such trend is 'boysober,' which has emerged as a response to dissatisfaction with modern dating practices.
According to The Independent, American comedian Hope Woodard coined the term 'boysober'.
'Boysober' Explained
The concept of boysober revolves around keeping one's twenties free from toxic dating habits and complicated relationships.
Woodard describes it as eliminating the "fake sense of validation that we get from dating and situationships and sleeping around, and refocusing that energy."
Essentially, boysober involves abstaining from all forms of dating for a year as an act of self-care, including sex.
Despite its name, boysober is not exclusive to women; it is a gender-neutral term.
It encourages young singles to take a break from dating, situationships, exes, toxic relationships, and hook-ups.
This period allows individuals to reflect, heal, and focus on their future desires.
Self-Love and Reflection
According to Today, boysober represents Gen Z's take on sex positivity by emphasizing self-love in romantic relationships.
Woodard clarifies that boysober differs from celibacy, which often carries religious connotations.
"I hate 'celibacy' so much because I don't want to give credence to anyone saying you're more lovable or respectable or better if you're not having sex," she said.
"Boysober is about taking time to pause, reflect and reprioritize - not to gain male (or female) approval," Woodard added.
This approach aims to foster personal growth rather than seeking validation through romantic or sexual encounters.
Other Notable Dating Trends
Boysober isn't the only trend making headlines recently. The 'Penny method' has been labeled one of the most toxic trends in dating.
It involves gradually reducing the effort put into a relationship until minimal effort becomes acceptable.
Another trend to avoid is 'Ground hogging,' which refers to repeatedly dating the same type of person while expecting different outcomes each time.
These trends highlight various pitfalls in modern dating practices.
Boysober offers a fresh perspective on relationships by promoting self-care and reflection over seeking external validation through dating or casual encounters.
This trend encourages individuals to prioritize their well-being and personal growth during their 20s.
