Scottish National Party (SNP) made history by winning 56 of 59 seats in Scotland in general election in Britain. Labour has been left with just one MP north of the border, but its Scottish leader Jim Murphy, who lost his seat, said he would continue in his post.

SNP's rout of Labour Party was not expected. The party won by 10,000 votes in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, which had previously been represented by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Many of the well known Labour leaders faced defeat by the hands of SNP leaders. The SNP victory has come barely seven months after Scotland's pro-independence movement failed in a referendum to break up the 308-year-old political union with England.

The Scottish National Party has overturned decades of Labour Party dominance by securing a record-breaking share of the vote. The party won a 50% share of the vote in Scotland, Labour secured just 24.3%.

UK election: Who is Mhairi Black

Labour Party heavyweight Douglas Alexander was defeated by a 20-year-old Glasgow University politics student Mhairi Black by a comfortable margin of 5,684 votes in the Paisley and Renfrewshire South seat.

The SNP also took every seat in Tayside, all six seats in the north east of Scotland, made huge gains in Edinburgh and Fife and wiped out the Lib Dems in the Highlands and Islands.

Will this massive victory of SNP bring independence for Scotland in distant future?
