Meet this farmer who designed water mill to produce electricity on his own

Siddappa Hulajogi who is a farmer from Somapur village in Gadag district of Karnataka, has designed a water mill to generate electricity of his own. Earlier he has also designed a mobile recharging unit using a tractor battery and also designed a tape recorder using a bicycle's dynamo.

Around 10 years ago, HESCOM had denied electricity to his house since he lived in a remote area. He then thought to build a water mill. It was a difficult task for Siddppa since he never went to school. Sidappa was inspired to build a windmills after looking at one such installed on the hills of Naragun. He realized that if he could replicate them, he would have power. He then started designing the water mill by using timbers.

The giant vertical wheel consists of eight wooden arms, five feet each which is joined at a central hub. At the end of each arm is a shallow plastic bucket , dangling loose. This windmill is installed in a canal, and two pipes pour water into two buckets, causing them to move down and set the wheel in motion. The buckets empty themselves while going up, and the process continues, spinning the giant wheel, which is attached to another smaller wheel connected to a dynamo. The dynamo generates Direct Current and a converter converts it into Alternating Current, which can then be used to power any appliance that runs on AC.

The windmill generates power to light up 10 bulbs of 60 watts and two TV sets. And when the wind speed is slow, they reduce usage. He gets around150 watts of power from this water mill when water flows in the canal. Siddappa claims that he can create electricity for the entire village through his machine.

Though Sidappa is illiterate he know the theories of dynamo technology. He has also repaired his own tractors and has modified one-row plough to a three-row one.
