Chennai, July 3: She is a "hero" in her community who fought against all odds to emerge triumphant. Meet Sathyasri Sharmila, the country's first transgender lawyer, whose success story is an inspiration for all.
Sharmila (36) is a resident of Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu and has recently enrolled her name in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to become the first transgender lawyer in the country.
In her life, Sharmila, like all the members of her community, has struggled a lot to achieve the milestone.
"Today I have enrolled my name in Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and became the first transgender lawyer in India. I have struggled a lot in my life. I expect that people from my community will do well and serve at higher positions across the country," Sharmila told ANI recently.

Last year, the Rajasthan Police had appointed its first transgender constable, Ganga Kumari, after the state High Court's directive.
The discrimination against the marginalised transgender community is known to all. As transgenders are till "ostracised" from the mainstream society, often they have no access to education and basic healthcare facilities. They have to also endure violence and abuse on a daily basis.
Due to lack of education and job opportunities, often transgenders are forced to do begging and sex work to earn their livelihood. However, "heroes" like Sharmila and Kumari are changing the way transgenders are treated in our society.
We salute Sharmila for achieving such glory, despite all her struggles, and wish her all the best for her future journey.
