Meet Neelam Dutta, the organic farmer from Assam

Biswanath Chariali is a city in Biswanath district in the state of Assam. Neelam Dutta, who is an innovative organic farmer from Pabhoi area which is around 30 km way from the town has become a role model.

He has not only inspired the farmers from his new techniques but is also well-known in abroad through his exclusive agricultural activities. He is also a well-known consultant in India in the organic agriculture domain.

Dutta, an MSW degree holder energetic youth and proprietor of the farm is presently working to increase the productivity, availability and affordability of agricultural products.

His popularly known farmhouse Pabhoi Greens which is located in the region as Lakshmi Agriculture Multipurpose Project is a composite farm established in 1978-79 by his father. His father Late Dr Hemen Dutta was a government Doctor who had quit his job and started farming on their own land which was around 12 hectares. In 1978, he started a
fishery and cultivated rice on some barren land. Neelam continued the legacy of his father after his death. Over the recent years, LAMP has diversified into Dairy, Nursery and Bio-Research as well.

In 2014, Dutta has been awarded the prestigious Haladhar Organic Farmer Award. The

Mahindra group has also awarded him with the National Farmers Award (Krishak Samrat) in 2016. Dutta is also the recipient of the National Farmers Award (Harit Award). Neelam has received Ambassadors Grant 2016-17 from ETH University, Zurich.

Dutta is deeply involved in a number of methodically planned organic agricultural activities also integrating dairy and fishery components in a scientific manner. He has also involved with the Assam Agricultural University, towards research based propagation of
efficient agricultural practices.

Pabhoi Greens which is an organic farm maintains more than 80 varieties of rice, indigenous to the states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. Currently, around 34 employees are working in the farm. Dutta also bears the educational expenses of the children of these employees.
