Karnataka Elections: Puttur Assembly Constituency
Puttur is a town in Dakshina Kannada district. It is believed that Puttur got its name after ""Mutthu"" (Pearl language), means ""Mutthur"", a place of pearls. Gradually, Muttur was renamed itself as Puttur. A small part of the Western Ghats touches Puttur town.
As per the mythology, because of drought here, priests were performing rituals and offering rice as prasadam in the Holy pond of Mahalingeshwara temple, suddenly the water started coming from all the corners and those rice turned into the pearls.
Sullia geographically located in Western Ghats and it is surrounded by Greem Mountains which makes the place as perfect destination of trekkers. Kumara Parvatha, Bisle Ghat, Bantamale, Patti Gudde, Sampaje Ghat and Koli Kamale are ideal place for trekking.
These places also has a variety of landscapes with small and large waterfalls.
Union Minister for Minister of Statistics & Programme Implementation, D.V. Sadananda Gowda had contested from this constituency twice in 1994 and 1999. Shakuntala T Shetty from Congress is the sitting MLA and she defeated Sanjeeva Matandoor of BJP.
