Karnataka elections: Bangarapet Assembly Constituency
Bangarpet is a town in the Kolar district. This town is known for its trading of rice. Bangarpet was originally called Bowringpet, named after an officer working in the Kolar Gold Fields. Legend has it that, the places where Sita wandered bare foot turned into gold mines because of the blessing of Goddess Lakshmi. Bangara or Bangaram and Telugu respectively means gold. Hence the name of the town 'Bangarpet'. The Kolar gold fields situated very close to Bangarpet testifies this piece of history.
Bangarpet is also famous for chaats and other savories, especially paani poori. Bangarpet paani poori has slowly found a firm place in the food menu of marriage and other functions across the state. This town is also famous for Karaga. The season of Karaga is usually termed as 'Jaathre' and held in the month of May every year.
Bangarpet is famous for the Sri Muttu Mariyamman Temple of Sait Compound and the temple celebrates Pongal every year. Chowdeshwari and Sapta Matrukeyara Temple of Attigiri Koppa are the other famous spots in the constituency.
The current MLA is S.N.Narayanaswamy from Congress and he defeated EM Naryanaswamy from BJP.
