Gandhi Nagar, is a busy neighbourhood in central Bengaluru. The area suffers from heavy traffic jams and pollution. Gandhinagar is the hub of the movie business in Karnataka. For decades, Kannada films vied for cinema halls in the bustling business district in the heart of the city.
The area is just across the city bus and railway stations, and it was easy for the thousands visiting the city to hop across, catch a film, eat at one of the many famous eateries, and take the last bus or train home.
Gandhinagar housed cinema halls that were household names. Althoug many of them are now shut as it has lost its appeal to the industry. The cinema halls in the area were Sagar, Prabhat, Alankar, Triveni, Tribhuvan, Kapali, Majestic, Kailash, States, Geetha, Abhinay, Santosh, Nartaki, Bhumika, Movieland, Sapna, Menaka, Mayura, Kempegowda, Prashanthi and Aparna. At one time, Gandhinagar had 20 theatres, showing films in a babble of languages, in just 2 sq km. Sixth Cross of Gandhinagar once had major film production houses, including Vijaya, Eshwari and KCN Movies. Now Vajreshwari Combines belonging to Dr. Rajkumar's family has its office here.
The following localities are a part of the Gandhi Nagar ward: Seshadripuram, Ramakrishna Layout, Nehru Nagar, VV Giri Colony, Bangalore City, Kempegowda Bus Station, R.K. Puram, Gandhinagar, Upparpet and Chikpete. A significant number of transgender people reside in Gandhi Nagar.
