Pics: Introducing Magnus Carlsen, the new King of Chess
Bangalore, Nov 23: Vishwanathan Anand, the reigning World Chess Champion for five years, was dethroned yesterday in Chennai, much to the dismay of the Indians who had pinned their hopes on the last two boards.
However, it goes without saying that the 22-year old young genius-Magnus Carlsen-was truely unique in his maneuvers and thinking powers to have ousted the champion.
Birth and early childhood
Born on November 30, 1990, Carlsen showed immense mental capabilities at a very tender age. At age 5, he got introduced to Chess by his father and was later taken under the shelter of Simen Agdestein, Norway's top player. THis began his journey into the world of Chess.
Chess
Since 2004, he has won several junior-level titles, including the C group at the Corus chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee. His other achievements include the Dubai Open Chess Championship. Later, he won the Glitnir Blitz Tournament, the World Blitz Championship, the Tata Steel Chess and more.
MOreover, he won the Chess Oscars for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The Chess Oscar, conducted by the Russian Chess Magazine 64, is awarded to the year's best player according to a worldwide panel of critics, journalists and writers.
On 26 April 2004, Carlsen was crowned the grandmaster at the age of 13 years, 148 days, making him the second youngest grandmaster in history at that point. On 1 January 2010, at the age of 19 years, 32 days, he became the youngest chess player in history to be ranked world No. 1. On the January 2013 FIDE rating list, Carlsen reached an Elo rating of 2861, which was at that time the highest in history.
Now, the new World Champion, Carlsen has set new standards for himself.
