Can Nuclear Fusion Power The Future? Scientists Announce A Major Breakthrough
Nuclear fusion, once considered science fiction, is now steadily turning into reality. Scientists in a Californian lab have achieved a groundbreaking step towards achieving limitless clean energy. Imagine harnessing the energy of the stars right here on Earth. No dirty emissions, no radioactive waste, just boundless, clean energy powering our homes and cities. That's nuclear fusion, the holy grail of clean energy, now seems closer than ever to our grasp.
CONTINUED IGNITION SIGNALS NUCLEAR-FUSION BREAKTHROUGH

In December 2022, scientists at the US National Ignition Facility (NIF) made a revolutionary breakthrough by producing a fusion reaction that released more energy than it consumed - a phenomenon known as ignition. Since then, scientists have successfully replicated nuclear fusion ignition multiple times. This development proves that the dream of replicating the stars' energy is not just a fleeting hope.
GLOBAL COALITION TO FULFILL NUCLEAR FUSION AMBITIONS
The future looks bright. This nascent technology could have a significant advantage over today's nuclear fission plants by producing vast amounts of clean energy without long-lasting radioactive waste. At the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, U.S. special climate envoy John Kerry launched an international engagement plan to accelerate nuclear fusion development, involving 35 nations.
HOW DOES NUCLEAR FUSION WORK?
Nuclear fusion attempts to replicate the fiery process that powers our sun and the stars. It can be replicated on Earth by using lasers or magnets to fuse two light atoms into a heavier one, releasing enormous amounts of energy in the process. This "friendly atom-bonding," similar to what happens in the sun, releases a burst of energy that can power entire cities. And the best part? No messy radioactive waste or climate-changing emissions.

HOW IS NUCLEAR FUSION ACHIEVED?
Scientists at NIF's stadium-sized lab aimed 192 high-powered lasers at a tiny frozen ball of hydrogen isotopes held within a diamond capsule suspended in a gold cylinder. The intense pressure and heat from the lasers crushed the ball, forcing its atoms to fuse. The achieved reaction mimicked the natural processes occurring in the Sun, leading to a remarkable 89% increase in energy output. While this amount of energy could only boil a kettle, scaling up this initial success could signify a giant leap towards a "new era" in energy production.
NUCLEAR FUSION IS A REASON TO BE EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE
Investment in the global fusion industry has now reached a cumulative US $6.21 billion, up from US $4.8 billion a year ago, according to the Fusion Industry Association. The stakes are high, and the potential is undeniable: two atoms of hydrogen, lighter than air, fuse into helium, releasing a burst of energy millions of times greater than their initial weight. It's the fuel of stars, and the key to potentially solving our growing energy crisis. However, there are still significant challenges to overcome before we can harness fusion for commercial electricity generation. Currently, scientists have only managed to occasionally achieve situations where fusion experiments yield more energy than is consumed in their initiation. Additionally, there are regulatory, construction, and financial hurdles in creating new types of power plants to replace parts of existing energy systems.
