Best Conservation Story in India – Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is a part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve. The Reserve lies in the Nainital District of Uttarakhand.

The history of the park:

The park was established in the year 1936 as Hailey National Park. It is India's oldest and the most prestigious National Park.

It is also honoured as the place where Project Tiger was first launched in 1973. Project Tiger was launched in India to protect the most endangered species tigers.

This National Park is spread in the area of 520 square kilometres. The terrain of the Park is hilly, marshy depressions, riverine belts, grasslands and large lake.

It is one of the few tiger reserves in India that allows visitors to spend night in the Park.

Wildlife to be seen:

For all those who love to watch wild life Jim Corbett National Park is one ultimate destination as one gets to see other rare species like Otters and also the endemic fish eating crocodiles among others.

However, the Royal Bengal Tiger was and will always remain the main attraction for those who visit the Park.

Visitors can observe the wild life here either in an open four wheeler jeep or an elephant back.

The Park is also a haven for bird watchers as one gets to see more than 650 species of residents and migratory birds.

Peacock, pheasant, pigeon, owl, hornbill, barbet, lark, myna, magpie, minivet, patridge, thrush, tit, nuthatch, wagtail, sunbird, bunting, oriole, kingfisher, drongo, dove, woodpecker, duck, teal, eagle, stork, cormorant, falcon, bulbul, flycatcher, redstart and gull attract so lakhs of visitors each year.

Jim Corbett National Park has variety of vegetation like sal, khair, ber, kuthber, bel, chbilla, dhak, semal, khingan, kharpat, rohini, bakli, pula and bamboo.

Ramganga River is the main source of water for the Park. River Kosi runs very close to the Park. Sonanadi, Mandal and Palain Rivers feed Ramganga River.

Jim Corbett National Park also invites people for adventure activities like rock-climbing, rappelling, river-crossing and slithering. These activities are organised by the hotels and resorts located near Jim Corbett Park.
