Bedridden, physically challenged Kerala man makes umbrellas to protect others from rain, sun

A physically challenged Kerala man earns his own livelihood by making umbrellas.

Thiruvananthapuram, June 4: A few years ago, a terrible accident has left Thaha, a resident of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, paralysed for life. But the massive blow did not push the ever-smiling Kerala man to resign to his fate.

In fact, he picked up the broken pieces of his life and rebuilt it in an amazing way. Today, he is an inspiration to many like him and others. Since the last five years, Thaha is making umbrellas and other products and earn his livelihood lying in his bed.

Thanks to social media and word of mouth, there is a sizeable demand for his handmade products which is helping Thaha to earn a decent income. The money earned from selling his products, which also include soap powder, jewellery, paper bags and LED bulbs, the middle-aged Kerala man is also monetarily taking care of other disadvantaged people.

"I became paralysed after an accident and had no means to live. I learnt to make this (umbrella) from a priest in church. I use social media for marketing my products," Thaha told ANI.

With the apt support from his two well-wishers, Unni and Manoj Pillai, the Kerala man is selling his products through platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.

"I know god is with me, there is nothing to be ashamed of. There is no point in sitting idle because of a disease. We must fight it out and not indulge in self-pity and do what we can best," Thaha told ANI.

Nonetheless it is not an easy journey for him as bed sores are a big concern for Thaha. To venture out, Thaha drives an automatic car customised for him with hand-held accelerator and break, reported ANI.

"I drive to many nearby towns and districts. The car has been customised to suit my needs; the accelerator and break are hand-held for my convenience," he smiled.
