Congress" safe bet Tarun Gogoi, became Assam"s Chief Minister for the third consecutive time in the Assembly Polls 2011. His party, the Indian National Congress emerged as the single largest part in the assembly winning 78 seat out of the total 126 seats.

Overall economic development of the state and successfully reigning in militant groups like ULFA for negotiations were seen as the major plus points for his coming back to power.
