Fact Check: Is this the image of Asad who was killed in UP encounter?

Since the killing of gangster Atiq Ahmed's son, Asad Ahmed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh police, many media organisations had shared images of Asad.

The images were shared with the claim that this is the picture of Asad, who along with his aide Ghulam was killed in an encounter, following the murder of Umesh Pal.

However what we have found that is that the image is not that of Asad.It that of Atiq Ahmed's second son, Ali Ahmed.

Ali is in jail following an extortion case that was reported 2021. He is currently lodged in the Naini Central Jail in UP's Prayagraj. In March, the Allahabad High Court had rejected his bail stating that letting him out would threaten not just the witnesses, but the society as well.

We also found an article in Zee which identified the man as Ali Ahmed. Several other media houses like Live Hindustan and Dainik Jagran have used the image and identified the man rightly as Asif Ahmed.

Atiq Ahmed's son, Asad and his aide Ghulam were both killed in an encounter carried out by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi. The police team had acted on the basis of information provided by the Intelligence agencies. Both Asad and Ghulam have been on the run since the murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in a murder case since February.

Hence going by media reports, it is clear that the photographs that are in circulation claiming that this is the image of Asad Ahmed who was killed in an encounter are false. The image that has been wrongly shared are that of Asif Ahmed, the second son of Atiq. He is currently lodged in jail in connection with an extortion case and was denied bail by a court in March.
