Fact Check: Is Tata Group constructing Central Vista for Re 1?
A post has gone viral with the claim that the Tata Group has decided to build the new Parliament building in 17 months and a cost of just one Rupee to Indian government.
The claim also states that this is being done as a gift to the nation. The post has gone viral several times since Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the new Parliament building last month.

On checking, we found that this claim is misleading. Tata Group is in fact constructing the Parliament building, but not at the cost of Re 1. It is in fact charging the government Rs 1,250 crore. The government has also announced that the Parliament building will be readying 2022, but added that some portions of the building are still under construction.
The Tata Group was awarded the contract to construct the new Parliament building at a cost of Rs 861.9 crore in September 2020. The Central Public Works Department had opened the financial bidding for construction of the new building.
We also found a report by the Hindustan Times published on August 4 2021 which said that a budget had already been spent on the new parliament projects. The report also said that the revised estimated cost for the new Parliament building was Rs 971 crore.
We also came across an NDTV report that said that the cost of the new Parliament building had shot up by 29 per cent. It also said that the the construction would now cost Rs 1,250 crore.
If one looks at the official statement on the government website it says that the tendered cost for the new building is Rs 862 crore. It also added the expenditure incurred for the building and Central Vista Avenue and said that the cost is at Rs 195 crore.
The construction of the new building began on January 23 2Screenshot 2023-04-10 at 8.54.13 AM.png021 and the government has announced a deadline of November 2022. It however added that the work on the new building would continue for another few months.
A written response was also given by the government in the Lok Sabha. The reply said that the estimated cost of the new Parliament building is Rs 971 crore and it is estimated to be completed by October 2022.
Going by all these reports, it is clear that the Tata Group is not constructing the new Parliament building at a cost of Rs 1 is false.
