False Rumors About AR Rahman's Conversion

In the wake of the separation news, some long-standing rumors about AR Rahman's religious conversion resurfaced, falsely linking his decision to Saira Banu. Speculation had suggested that Rahman converted to Islam for his former wife, but the truth is different.

AR Rahman, originally named AS Dileep Kumar, converted to Islam at the age of 23 after a profound spiritual experience.

In a 2000 interview with Karan Thapar, he discussed how the decision was shaped by a Sufi healer who had cared for his father in the latter stages of his battle with cancer. Rahman recounted that several years later, he and his family reconnected with the healer, which inspired them to adopt a new faith. "There was a Sufi who treated him during his last days. We met him again 7-8 years later, and that's when we embraced another faith," Rahman shared.

Rahman converted to Islam in the 1980s and changed his name as part of this spiritual journey. He also explained in the book AR Rahman: The Spirit of Music by Nasreen Munni Kabir that he had never been fond of his original name.

A Hindu astrologer suggested the names Abdul Rahman and Abdul Rahim, and Rahman chose the former, feeling an instant connection. His mother later added "Allah Rakha" (AR) after having a dream.

AR Rahman's Divorce Statement

On Tuesday night, Rahman expressed his deep emotions in a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "We had hoped to reach our grand goal of thirty, but all things seem to carry an unseen conclusion. Even the throne of God might tremble under the weight of broken hearts. Yet, amid this heartbreak, we search for meaning, even if the pieces do not come together again." He concluded his note by thanking friends and fans for their support and for respecting their privacy during this challenging time.

AR Rahman and Saira Banu are the proud parents of three children: Khatija, Raheema, and AR Ameen.

Despite the personal challenges, Rahman remains focused on his work and is currently involved in several high-profile projects, including Chhaava, Lahore 1947, and Genie.
