Fact Check: Did a sea of humanity descend on Asad Ahmed’s funeral

A video has gone viral with the claim that the funeral of Asad Ahmed, the son of slain gangster Atiq Ahmed was attended by scores of people.

Asad had been killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh police in an encounter in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case. On the night of April 15, Atiq Ahmed also wanted in the same case was shot dead along with his brother Ashraf by three men posing as journalists.

Now a video of huge gathering has gone viral with the claim that this is from the funeral of Asad.

"This is a crowd of people who had gathered to attend Atiq Ahmed's deceased son Asad Ahmed's funeral. This makes it quite evident that Asad had never exploited people. Otherwise, nobody would come to his funeral, just like nobody came to attend Umesh Pal's funeral," wrote one user on Twitter in Hindi.

Running a reverse search of the viral video, OneIndia learnt that this is not from the funeral of Asad. It is in fact the funeral procession of Islamic scholar Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi.

We found a longer version of this video on YouTube which was posted on April 14 2023. As per this video, the last rites of Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi can be seen in this video.

When compares the video that has gone viral and one shared on YouTube, it clearly shows the similarities, which led us to conclude that this is not from the funeral of Asad.

The funeral of Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi was held in the campus of Screenshot 2023-04-17 at 10.32.40 AM.pngthe Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow.

The actual video of Asad is also on YouTube and the same can be seen below.

Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi was the president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and chancellor or the Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow. He died on April 13 at the age of 94.

Hence we could say in conclusion that the video that has gone viral with the claim that scores of people attended the funeral of Asad Ahmed is false. It is in fact from the funeral of Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi.
