Fact Check: Are 64% of new appointed government doctors in Assam, Muslims?
According to a 2021 census of Assam, it was found that 34 per cent of the population in the state are Muslims
A message has gone viral with the claim that in Assam a majority of those recently appointed as government doctors are from the minority community.
A list with three pages is being shared with the claim that out of the 55 doctors recently appointed by the Assam Public Service Commission, 35 are religious minorities. This means that 64 per cent of the doctors appointed are minorities or Muslims.

While looking at the list, it does have a lot of Muslim names. However is this claim right?
Giving the list a closer look, OneIndia has learnt that this is not a list of new appointments. If one looks at the accompanying text, it is clear that this is not a selection, but a transfer list. The order dated February 23 says, " in partial modification of this Department Notification No.HLA.1/2023/94 dated 19/01/2023 andin the interest of public service the following newly appointed doctors in the rank of M&HO-I are hereby modified their place of posting against their name(s) with immediate effect and until further order. The list can be accessed here:
This makes it clear that the order was issued to modify a previous order of January 19. This order says that the place of posting of 55 doctors has been changed fro the original place of posting mentioned in the earlier order. This list includes only those doctors who have been posted to different places from what was earlier mentioned. In this list 64 per cent are Muslims.
The order dated January 19 was regarding the appointment of new Medical and Health Officers-1 in Assam. In that list 541 doctors are named who have been selected for posting in various government hospitals in Assam. That list can be found here.
According to a 2021 census of Assam, the share of Muslims in the total population in the state is 34 per cent. Hence the share of Muslims in the newly appointed government doctors' list marches with the overall share of Muslims in Assam.
Further the claim being made is that the doctors were appointed by the Assam Public Services Commission. This claim too is incorrect and the appointments have been made by the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Assam government based on the re commendation of the Medical and Health Recruitment Board, Assam.
