A video capturing the dramatic fall of MLA Uma Thomas from a makeshift stage at Kaloor Stadium in Kochi has gone viral, sparking widespread concerns about safety standards at public events. The incident occurred on a stage set approximately 15 feet above the ground during a cultural program.

The Incident

The footage shows Thomas navigating the cramped stage, where narrow gaps between chairs and a flimsy queue manager served as the only barrier against a potential fall. A person on stage moved a chair to help her reach the front row, but the lack of space made movement precarious.

Thomas briefly sat on a chair before actor Sijoy Varghese appeared to suggest she move to another seat. Attempting to walk past another individual, she stumbled due to the limited space and lost her balance. Grasping for support, she could only grab the lightweight queue manager, which failed to hold her weight, causing her to fall off the stage.

Several dignitaries, including Culture Minister Saju Cherian, GCDA Chairman K. Chandran Pillai, and Kochi City District Police Chief Putta Vimaladitya, witnessed the incident from the stage.

Response and Investigation

Meanwhile, the Kochi police have issued a notice to the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), seeking clarification regarding the safety measures at the event. The GCDA's engineering division was responsible for inspecting the stage before the cultural program, and the police have demanded an explanation on whether the necessary safety checks were conducted.

Uma Thomas sustained severe injuries and is currently under medical care. The incident has raised questions about event safety protocols and the structural integrity of temporary arrangements at public gatherings.
