Vaa Vaathiyaar OTT Release Update: When Will Karthi's New Tamil Film Be Out Online?

Karthi-starrer Vaa Vaathiyaar, which hit theatres on January 14 as a Pongal release, has completed its first full week at the box office. Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy of Soodhu Kavvum fame, the film opened to largely favourable reviews and positive audience feedback. However, despite the encouraging response, the film has fallen short of expectations in terms of overall box office performance.

The film managed to register a decent opening, particularly over its first two days, before witnessing a steady decline in collections as the week progressed. Trade analysts note that while Vaa Vaathiyaar found appreciation for its quirky narrative and performances, it struggled to sustain momentum amid stiff festive competition and mixed mass appeal.

Box Office Performance: A Gradual Slide After Early Promise

Vaa Vaathiyaar earned an estimated ₹8.45 crore net in India during its first seven days. The film's India gross currently stands at approximately ₹9.95 crore, while its eight-day worldwide collection is reported to be around ₹10.7 crore.

The movie opened on a promising note with ₹1.65 crore on Day 1, followed by a significant jump on Day 2, collecting ₹2.35 crore. However, collections dipped on Day 3 to ₹1.55 crore and continued to decline over the weekend and weekdays. By Day 7, daily collections had dropped to ₹0.2 crore, with Day 8 bringing in a modest ₹0.17 crore.

Despite the gradual fall, industry observers point out that the film's performance cannot be termed disastrous, especially considering its niche storytelling approach. However, it has clearly failed to "strike gold" theatrically.

Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, Vaa Vaathiyaar boasts a strong ensemble cast featuring Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Anand Raj, Shilpa Manjunath, Karunakaran, G.M. Sundar, Ramesh Thilak, P.L. Thenappan, Vidhya Borgia, Nivas Adithitan, Madhur Mittal and others.

Rajkiran's performance, in particular, has received praise for adding emotional depth to the film, while Karthi once again earned appreciation for attempting a layered and unconventional role.

The film opens on an eccentric yet emotionally charged note. Rajkiran plays a die-hard fan of MGR who is devastated upon hearing the legendary actor's death while watching one of his films in a packed theatre. Coinciding with this moment is the birth of his grandson. Convinced that the timing is divine, the old man believes the child is destined to carry forward MGR's legacy.

He raises the boy with ideals drawn from classic cinema-honesty, justice, and heroism. However, as the child grows up, fate takes an ironic turn. Instead of idolising MGR, he becomes fascinated by the flamboyant villains portrayed by Nambiar. That boy grows up to become Karthi, a morally complex police officer who operates in grey zones, blurring the lines between law enforcement and vigilantism.

The film's blend of satire, nostalgia, and social commentary has been appreciated by a section of audiences, though it may not have resonated widely with mass viewers.

With theatrical business slowing down, attention has now shifted to the film's digital prospects. Reports suggest that Amazon Prime Video had acquired the post-theatrical OTT rights for Vaa Vaathiyaar. However, complications arose after a Madras High Court stay related to unpaid dues exceeding ₹21 crore reportedly delayed earlier release plans.

The latest buzz indicates that the film is expected to premiere in the first week of February. That said, an official announcement from the makers or the streaming platform is still awaited.
