Swara Bhasker's EVM Rant as Fahad Ahmad Trails in Maharashtra Election

In the midst of Maharashtra's assembly election count, a controversy stirred, led by Bollywood actress and political commentator Swara Bhasker. She raised doubts over the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs spotlighting a peculiar incident during the count for the Anushakti Nagar assembly seat. Bhasker, citing a sudden lead change favoring the BJP-backed NCP-Ajit Pawar candidate, questioned how EVMs, operational all day, could show a 99% battery charge and why such charged machines overwhelmingly favored BJP and its allies. This skepticism was voiced shortly after her husband, NCP (SP) candidate Fahad Ahmad, was defeated by NCP (Ajit Pawar) candidate Sana Mallik, marking a notable shift in the election narrative.

Fahad Ahmad's call for a recount further intensified the debate on EVM reliability. He specifically pointed out an abrupt lead change after EVMs with a 99% charge were opened post the 16th round of counting, which saw the BJP-supported candidate pulling ahead. Ahmad's demand for reevaluating votes cast during rounds 16 through 19 sparked broader discussions, as he implied the sudden lead switch was due to the irregular performance of these machines. This incident not only highlighted questions about EVM accuracy but also underscored the tension-filled moments in the electoral process.

The broader electoral battle in Maharashtra saw the Mahayuti alliance, consisting of the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, surging toward a significant victory. As of the afternoon, the alliance had not only secured eight seats but was also leading in over 200 constituencies, indicating a potential landslide win. This was a historic moment for the BJP, mirroring a feat last achieved by the Congress in 1990, with the party leading in more than 100 seats. The celebrations were palpable, with key leaders like Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis receiving sweets at their residences, signaling a triumphant mood among the alliance's ranks.

Chief Minister Shinde, amid the favorable outcomes for Mahayuti, touched on the future leadership of Maharashtra. He suggested that the decision on who would hold the Chief Minister's position would be a collective one, made by leaders from all three parties within the alliance. This statement hinted at a united front within Mahayuti, showing a willingness to collaboratively address leadership questions once the final results were solidified.

Celebrations were not just confined to political offices but also found a place at CM Shinde's residence in Thane. Here, jubilant Shiv Sena workers and family members came together, buoyed by the electoral success. Shrikant Shinde, Shiv Sena MP and the Chief Minister's son, expressed gratitude towards the electorate for their overwhelming support, attributing the victory to strategic campaigning and the alliance's cohesive efforts.

With Maharashtra's assembly elections capturing widespread attention, Swara Bhasker's allegations against EVMs brought a layer of controversy to an otherwise straightforward electoral process. While the Mahayuti alliance celebrated its anticipated victory, questions on the reliability of EVMs and the specifics of electoral integrity became points of contention, adding complexity to the narrative of Maharashtra's political landscape.
