Oscars 2026 Nominations: Sinners Leads Academy Race With 16 Mentions, DiCaprio Film Close Behind

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were unveiled on Thursday, setting the stage for a tightly contested Oscar season.

Ryan Coogler's Sinners emerged as the clear frontrunner, leading the field with an impressive 16 nominations across major and technical categories. Leonardo DiCaprio's One Battle After Another followed closely, securing 14 nods and reinforcing its position as a major awards contender.

While Hollywood heavyweights dominated the list, India faced disappointment as Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound, backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, failed to advance despite being the country's official submission for Best International Feature Film.

Sinners and One Battle After Another Lead the Race

Ryan Coogler's Sinners made its presence felt across nearly every major category, including Best Picture, Best Director, acting performances, screenplay, and several technical honours. Michael B. Jordan earned a Best Actor nomination for his role, while Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku were recognised in the supporting categories.

Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another also enjoyed strong support from the Academy, landing nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as multiple supporting and technical categories. The film's broad appeal placed it firmly among the top Oscar contenders this year.

Strong Showing for Auteur Films and Performances

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein received widespread recognition, particularly in technical fields such as cinematography, production design, make-up and hairstyling, sound, and visual effects. Jacob Elordi earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance.

Timothée Chalamet continued his awards momentum with Marty Supreme, which collected nine nominations, including Best Actor and Best Director for Josh Safdie. Meanwhile, Hamnet earned strong backing with nominations for Best Picture, Best Director for Chloé Zhao, Best Actress for Jessie Buckley, and multiple technical categories.

In the acting races, Emma Stone (Bugonia), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) emerged as notable nominees, highlighting a diverse and competitive field.

India Misses Out in International Feature Category

India's hopes rested on Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound, starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. Despite its selection as India's official entry, the film did not make the final shortlist for Best International Feature Film.

The category instead features The Secret Agent (Brazil), It Was Just an Accident (France), Sentimental Value (Norway), Sirât (Spain), and The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia), reflecting a strong international lineup.

The nominations across 24 categories were announced by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman during a live broadcast on ABC's Good Morning America and streamed on the Academy's official YouTube channel from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Los Angeles.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for 15 March 2026 at the Dolby Theatre, with Conan O'Brien set to host the evening.
