Nilgiris: A Shared Wilderness: India’s Award-Winning Documentary on Wildlife Conservation
Step into the mystical blue mountains with Nilgiris: A Shared Wilderness, a documentary that brings India's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve to the nation's big screens for the very first time. Directed by Emmy-nominated and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Sandesh Kadur, this cinematic masterpiece not only celebrates the breathtaking wildlife and landscapes of the Nilgiris, but also places India at the center of the global conversation on conservation.
The Nilgiris is releasing nationwide on July 18. It is the first feature-length wildlife documentary to be given this recognition.
Nilgiris has already captured international acclaim, sweeping awards at Cannes, Ankara, Houston, and Santiago. Its lush 8K visuals immerse audiences in a world where black leopards, gaur, sloth bears, and elephants roam-often among human-shaped landscapes like tea gardens, demonstrating nature's resilience and adaptability.

For many, the film will evoke memories of the Oscar-winning The Elephant Whisperers, another Indian work that moved the world with its empathy and respect for elephants and their mahouts. But Nilgiris goes even broader: it is a call to awaken society-community, government, and marketplace-to the urgent need to protect India's richest, most diverse wilderness as development and climate change transform the land.

Executive producer Rohini Nilekani calls the film "a call to action for everyone who feels connected to these sacred landscapes." Through this landmark theatrical release, Nilgiris cements India's reputation as not just a powerhouse in wildlife filmmaking, but as a leader in global wildlife conservation, teaching the world how ancient traditions and modern challenges can harmoniously coexist if we choose to act.
As India's forests and stories reach the world, Nilgiris: A Shared Wilderness is more than a film, it's a movement, and a testament to India's enduring love and stewardship of its wild heart.
