Lokah OTT Release: How Much Did Jio Hotstar Pay For Its Digital Rights?

Mark your calendars, folks! The much-talked-about superhero flick, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, is finally ready for its digital debut. Starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, the film is set to premiere on Jio Hotstar on October 31st.

And get this - it's shaping up to be a massive showdown for your screen time. The same day Lokah drops, the highly anticipated Kantara 2 is also making its digital premiere on Amazon Prime. October 31st is officially a movie marathon day!

So, What's This Superhero Story All About?

The film follows Chandra, also known as Neeli (played by Kalyani Priyadarshan), who isn't your average girl next door. She's an immortal, blessed with incredible strengths but also burdened with very real vulnerabilities. After a narrow escape during a mission, she's advised by the mysterious Moothon (voiced by the legendary Mammootty) to lie low.

She tries to do just that by moving to Bengaluru, where her quiet life catches the eye of her sunny neighbour, Sunny (Naslen). A curious friendship blossoms, but things take a wild turn when Sunny uncovers her true, immortal identity. He's left both shocked and seriously spooked.

Meanwhile, a sharp-witted Inspector named Nachiyappa Gowda (Sandy Master) is already sniffing around, growing suspicious of Chandra. What tipped him off? Who is Chandra, really? And what secrets from her ancient past are about to crash into her present? The answers are coming to a screen near you.

A Theatrical Smash Hit Coming Home

If you missed it in theatres, you're in for a treat. The movie, which originally released on August 28th, was a colossal box office success, raking in over a whopping Rs 300 crore worldwide. It will be streaming in a bunch of languages: Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi.

So, What's the Big Digital Deal?

Now, for the behind-the-scenes tea. The makers chatted with several streaming giants, but ultimately, Jio Hotstar won the rights. While the official number is under wraps, industry reports are buzzing with a truly massive figure for the OTT rights.

If the rumours are true, the deal is so huge that it reportedly topped the digital rights price for the big-budget Mohanlal and Prithviraj film, Empuraan. It's believed the streaming platform was willing to pay a premium because Lokah is planned as a multi-part series, giving it serious long-term brand recall value.

Well, Jio Hotstar has reportedly paid Rs 75 crore which Empuraan was acquired by the same platform for Rs 60 crore.

A Star-Studded Affair

Beyond the lead pair, Lokah boasts an incredible cast including Sandy Master, Arun Kurian, and Vijay Raghavan, with supporting roles featuring heavyweights like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Dulquer Salmaan, and Tovino Thomas.
