Lokah Lifetime Box Office Collection: Kalyani's Film Mints Big Before OTT Release

Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen's Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, which was released on OTT platform last weekend, has turned out to be a monumental success story for Malayalam cinema in 2025. Directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, the film was released on 28 August with a decent pre-release buzz.

What initially began as a promising Malayalam release soon transformed into a nationwide phenomenon, driven by strong reviews, word-of-mouth appreciation, and increasing screen expansion beyond Kerala.
On its opening day, the film collected ₹3.15 crore across India, including a strong ₹2.65 crore from Kerala alone, as per Sacnilk data.

The positive audience reception became evident through the weekend. The second day, Friday, registered a jump to ₹4.7 crore, followed by a massive surge to ₹8.85 crore on Saturday. The real turning point came on Sunday when the film raked in ₹11.75 crore, clearly indicating that Lokah had captured public attention in a big way. By the end of its first week, the film had already collected ₹63.8 crore, which is exceptional for a Malayalam film in recent times.

The momentum sustained through the second week as well. With steady footfalls and increasing shows in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and the Telugu-speaking regions, Lokah added another ₹55.05 crore in week two. Even in its third week, the film continued to draw crowds, collecting ₹31.85 crore.

It was only from the fourth week onwards that the box office graph began to cool down, as newer releases arrived and repeat viewership slowed. Over the next few weeks, the collections gradually tapered off, and by the end of the eighth week, the weekly earnings had dropped to around ₹65 lakh - a natural closure for a film that had already exhausted its mainstream theatrical run.

The film's lifetime India gross stands at an impressive ₹183.6 crore. Kerala emerged as the strongest market, contributing ₹120.85 crore to the total Indian earnings. Tamil Nadu was the next major contributor with ₹24.08 crore, followed by Karnataka with ₹15.40 crore and Andhra-Telangana with ₹14.61 crore. The rest of India added ₹8.57 crore. These numbers underline how Lokah managed to transcend linguistic boundaries - a feat that only a handful of Malayalam films have achieved in the national circuit, the data said.

The film's overseas performance was equally remarkable. Strong Malayali diaspora support, coupled with positive international reviews, helped Lokah earn ₹119.9 crore overseas. This pushed the worldwide total to a staggering ₹303.5 crore - a collection that places the film among the highest grossing Malayalam films ever made.

Considering the estimated budget of around ₹30 crore, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra is not just a blockbuster - it is a runaway success with extraordinary profit margins.

The film's performance highlights a shifting dynamic in Malayalam cinema. In recent years, Malayalam films have increasingly appealed to a wider national audience due to their compelling storytelling, realistic presentation, and strong performances. Lokah builds on this trend, delivering scale, emotion, and a narrative world that is set to continue in further chapters.
