Actress Kiara Advani is caught up in a web of digital deception as a fake photo of her wearing a red bikini circulates on social media.

It comes on a day the actress is celebrating her first wedding anniversary with husband Siddharth Malhotra.

Kiara Advani's visage has been superimposed onto the body of another woman and it is a creation of deepfake technology. However, many actresses have fallen victim to such fabricated content. Notable among them are: Rashmika Mandanna, Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai, Kriti Sanon, etc.

In this digital age where truth can be manipulated with the click of a button, these incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the shadows of cyberspace.

Deepfakes are videos or images that are created using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered deep learning software that shows people saying and doing things that they didn't say or do.

The misuse of technology became a hot topic of discussion in India a few months ago after a deep fake video of Rashmika Mandanna started circulating on social media platforms. Similarly, fake videos of Kajol, Alia Bhat and a few others went viral.

Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned that deepfakes created by artificial intelligence can lead to a big crisis and stoke discontent in society, as he urged the media to raise awareness about its misuse and educate people.

The Centre directed social media companies to take action against content that breaches the rules and regulations outlined in the IT Rules 2021, ensuring adherence within specified timeframes. Also, users are cautioned against sharing or hosting such infringing information, content, or deepfakes.
