Karuppu 1st Day Box Office Collection: Suriya's Film Gets Flying Start In Tamil Nadu

Suriya has delivered a powerful opening at the box office with Karuppu, as the action entertainer collected an impressive ₹20.66 crore worldwide on its first day despite facing last-minute release hurdles. The film, which was delayed by a day due to unforeseen issues, still managed to attract strong footfalls across Tamil Nadu and key overseas markets, signalling a solid comeback for the actor.

According to the trade figures, Karuppu earned ₹14.40 crore net in India on Day 1 from 4,891 shows across Tamil and Telugu versions. The India gross stood at ₹16.66 crore, while overseas markets contributed another ₹4 crore gross, taking the worldwide total to ₹20.66 crore, as per Sacnilk data.

The Tamil version remained the major driving force behind the opening numbers. The film minted ₹12 crore net from Tamil screens alone with an overall occupancy of 54 per cent across 3,448 shows. The Telugu dubbed version added ₹2.40 crore net with a decent 30 per cent occupancy from 1,443 shows.

What has particularly encouraged the trade is the steady growth in occupancy throughout the day. While morning shows opened on a moderate note at 24.54 per cent, collections picked up significantly during evening and night shows. The night occupancy touched an excellent 75.15 per cent, indicating strong positive word-of-mouth and family audience support.

Chennai emerged as the film's strongest market on Day 1. The city registered a massive 70.5 per cent overall occupancy from 592 shows, with night shows soaring to 92 per cent. Trade analysts believe the exceptional response in the capital city could help the film maintain momentum over the weekend.

Several other Tamil Nadu centres also reported impressive occupancies. Trichy recorded 68.5 per cent occupancy, Pondicherry registered 67.8 per cent, while Coimbatore posted 63.8 per cent overall occupancy. Even cities that started slowly in the morning witnessed strong growth during late evening and night screenings.

Outside Tamil Nadu, Karnataka contributed significantly with ₹2 crore gross collections. Bengaluru alone saw occupancy climbing to 66 per cent during night shows. Kerala too delivered encouraging numbers with ₹1.25 crore gross, aided by decent turnout in Kochi and Trivandrum.

The state-wise gross collection breakdown further highlights Tamil Nadu's dominance. Out of the ₹16.66 crore India gross, Tamil Nadu alone contributed ₹10.50 crore. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together added ₹2.75 crore, while the rest of India contributed ₹16 lakh.

The overseas performance has also given a boost to the film's overall opening. Markets with strong Tamil diaspora audiences reportedly witnessed packed evening and late-night shows, helping the film cross the ₹20 crore worldwide mark on its opening day itself.

Trade experts now believe the real test for Karuppu will begin over the weekend. With strong night occupancies, positive audience chatter, and the advantage of limited major competition, the film is expected to witness a further jump on Saturday and Sunday.

For Suriya, the opening of Karuppu marks an important box office success after months of anticipation around the project. If the current momentum continues, the film could comfortably emerge as one of the actor's strongest post-pandemic openers in the coming days.
