Kannappa 1st Day Box Office Collection: Prabhas' Presence Gives A Boost To Vishnu-Starrer

Vishnu Manchu's long-anticipated mythological action-drama Kannappa finally hit the big screens on Friday, June 27. Thanks in part to the cameo appearance by Prabhas, the film has opened to an above-average start- especially in the Telugu-speaking states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

While the film saw strong occupancy in the Telugu belt, its performance in other language markets was subdued, making the opening day a mixed bag overall.

Telugu Version Powers the Opening Day

The Telugu version of Kannappa was the film's saving grace on opening day. With an overall occupancy of 55.89%, the film performed particularly well in major urban centres, going by the Sacnilk data.

  • Hyderabad saw the highest traction with 69.75% occupancy across 394 shows, followed closely by Vizag (76.50% from 105 shows), Vijayawada (74.50% from 81 shows), and Guntur (64.25% from 42 shows).

Show-wise, the film's popularity grew steadily through the day:

  • Morning shows started at 50.55%,
  • Afternoon slightly dipped to 50.34%,
  • Evening shows picked up at 52.81%,
  • Night shows peaked at 69.87%.

The star power of Prabhas, even in a guest appearance, significantly contributed to initial footfalls, along with local interest in the mythological storyline rooted in South Indian culture.

Tamil Version Opens Low Despite Multi-Language Release

The Tamil version of Kannappa struggled to find a solid footing on the first day. The film recorded an overall occupancy of 16.45% on Friday. Although Chennai showed some promise with 44.25% occupancy from 34 shows, the rest of Tamil Nadu had a tepid response.

The show-wise breakdown reveals an inconsistent trend:

  • Morning shows started weak at 11.52%,
  • Afternoon shows saw a slight jump to 20.60%,
  • Evening occupancy fell again to 11.00%,
  • Night shows ended at a relatively better 22.68%.

The lack of local star presence and moderate promotion in the Tamil market could be reasons for the limited engagement.

Hindi Version Fails to Attract Viewers

Kannappa had an overall Hindi occupancy of just 14.56% on its opening day. The Mumbai market, which often sets the tone for a film's Hindi version, saw a 20.75% occupancy from 25 shows.

Occupancy gradually rose through the day, but still fell short of expectations despite Akshay Kumar being part of the cast:

  • Morning shows were extremely low at 4.83%,
  • Afternoon shows improved to 14.23%,
  • Evening and night shows saw 14.18% and 24.99% occupancy, respectively.

Despite its mythological theme, which typically appeals to Hindi audiences, the lack of familiar Bollywood faces and cultural specificity may have limited its reach.
Kannada and Malayalam Versions See Minimal Traction

The Kannada version also saw a muted response with an overall day 1 occupancy of 13.81%. Show-wise occupancy was fairly uniform throughout the day:

  • Morning at 12.83%,
  • Afternoon at 14.42%,
  • Evening at 11.00%,
  • Night shows closed with 17.00%.

Meanwhile, the Malayalam version had the lowest turnout. With no overall figure available, individual show data reflects the struggle:

  • Morning at 5.50%,
  • Afternoon at 6.09%,
  • Evening at 6.03%,
  • Night shows barely crossed double digits at 11.17%.

Promising Start in Telugu Heartland, Weekend Holds the Key

Kannappa has managed to generate a strong regional opening, with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contributing the lion's share to the ₹9 crore day 1 net collection. The presence of Prabhas and a good promotion have helped the movie to get a good start.

The Baahubali Star's fans have thronged to theatres on the first day to get a glimpse to his role, thereby giving a good start at the collection centres.

The mythological angle, along with Vishnu Manchu's ambitious scale and Prabhas' fanbase, has ensured initial attention. But sustaining momentum will depend heavily on word-of-mouth and weekend crowd turnout-especially in non-Telugu markets.

The coming days will determine if Kannappa can build on its good start in the South or if it will remain largely a one-region wonder.
