Jayam Ravi Divorce Case: How Much Alimony Is Aarti Ravi Demanding From Him?

Amid drama around Jayam Ravi and Aarti's divorce case, it is now being reported that the estranged wife has demanded monthly alimony from the Tamil actor who has been living separately from her for over a year now.

Reports in the Tamil media claim that Aarti Ravi has reportedly demanded ₹40 lakhs per month as alimony. However, the family court has ordered the actor to submit his response to her demand by June 12.

What Is Alimony?

Alimony in India refers to the financial support provided by one spouse to the other during or after a divorce. Its purpose is to help the dependent spouse maintain a standard of living similar to that enjoyed during the marriage. The amount and type of alimony are determined by courts after evaluating various factors.

Indian law recognizes three main types of alimony. Interim alimony provides temporary support while divorce proceedings are ongoing, usually paid monthly.

At this stage, Aarti is reportedly seeking temporary support as the divorce proceedings is still on.

Once the divorce is finalized, permanent alimony takes effect, which can be structured as ongoing payments or a lump-sum amount, depending on the court's assessment.

How Courts Decide Alimony

Judges consider various aspects before determining alimony, including the income and future earning potential of both spouses, the duration of the marriage, and the standard of living maintained during the union. The age, health, and parental responsibilities of the claimant also play a crucial role. Additionally, courts may examine each spouse's conduct during the marriage and their contributions-financial or otherwise-to the household.

Aarti and Jayam Ravi had tied the knot in 2009 and announced their separation in 2024. In 2024, the latter announced that they were parting ways, the former claimed that she wants to be with him.

Earlier this month, Ravi made his first public appearance with his rumoured girlfriend Kenishaa Francis, thus indicating that he is serious about his relationship.

Aarti Blames Kenishaa For Divorce

Aarti Ravi has directly blamed Jayam Ravi's rumoured girlfriend Kenishaa for the trouble in her marriage and divorce while calling his "light of his life" brought "darkness" in their lives.

In a strongly worded press statement released recently, Aarti wrote, "There is little space for those who choose dignity over drama. Recent manipulations leave me no choice but to speak one last time.The truth needs to be said-once and for all. Money, power, interference, or control-none of these are why our marriage suffers. There is a third person in our marriage. What broke us wasn't something between us-it was someone outside. The 'light of your life' brought only darkness into ours. That's the truth. This person was already in the picture-long before any divorce papers were filed. This isn't guesswork. I have proof."

The phrase "light of your life" is a pointed reference to Ravi's earlier public statement in which he praised Kenishaa with those very words.
