Jana Nayagan Release: Thalapathy Vijay's Film Sent to Censor Revising Committee In Mumbai

The much-anticipated Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan has now been referred to the revising committee in Mumbai, further delaying its theatrical release and effectively ending hopes of a February release, as per the reports in the Tamil media.

With the certification process expected to take time, the film will now arrive only after the state elections which is expected to be held in April-May.

This development that many believe dilutes the political momentum it could have generated for Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The delay has officially ruled out a February 27 release date. Fans had been eagerly awaiting a late-month launch, especially after speculation earlier this week that the revising committee might screen the film on February 19 or 20. Had that timeline materialised, a last-minute release could have been possible. However, with no progress on the censor front, the February window has now firmly closed.

Produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan has faced a turbulent path to theatres. The film was originally slated for a grand Pongal release on January 9 but ran into certification hurdles. In a bid to resolve the impasse, the makers approached the Madras High Court and later escalated the matter to the Supreme Court. However, after failing to secure favourable relief from the courts, the production house withdrew its legal efforts, leaving the film's fate tied to the revising committee's timeline.

With Jana Nayagan currently stalled, industry insiders say KVN Productions is redirecting its focus to its other high-profile venture, Toxic. The big-budget entertainer stars Kannada superstar Yash and is gearing up for a massive March 19 release. The film is expected to lock horns at the box office with Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar, making it crucial for the production house to channel its promotional resources effectively. Given the scale and financial stakes involved, prioritising Toxic appears to be a strategic decision.

Trade circles now speculate that if the censor issues surrounding Jana Nayagan are resolved soon, the film could target an April release. April 30 is emerging as a strong contender, as it falls after the Tamil Nadu local body elections, ensuring a politically neutral climate for its arrival in cinemas. Since the film marks Vijay's final outing before fully transitioning into politics, timing is being viewed as particularly sensitive.

Should the April slot prove unviable, June is being discussed as a fallback option. June 19 is reportedly under consideration, strategically positioned just days before Vijay's birthday on June 22 - a move that could convert fan celebrations into box office momentum.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is said to be inspired by the 2023 Telugu blockbuster Bhagavanth Kesari. The film carries added weight as it represents Vijay's swansong on the big screen before his political plunge. The cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju in key roles, alongside seasoned performers such as Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.

While the uncertainty surrounding Jana Nayagan continues, Vijay's fans have found some cheer in the re-release of his blockbuster Ghilli, co-starring Trisha, which has sparked celebrations across theatres.
