Jana Nayagan Release Date Update: Will It Be Postponed Or Get New Release Date?

With just days left for its scheduled theatrical debut, uncertainty continues to loom large over the release of Jana Nayagan, touted as Thalapathy Vijay's final film as a full-time actor. The much-anticipated project, slated to hit screens on January 9, may face a postponement if it does not receive a favourable order from the Madras High Court, where the matter is currently under consideration.

While advance bookings for Jana Nayagan have already opened in several centres outside Tamil Nadu and in overseas markets-indicating strong initial demand-the situation remains starkly different in Vijay's home state. Ticket sales are yet to commence across Tamil Nadu, primarily because the film has not been granted final certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This delay has triggered anxiety among fans and exhibitors alike, especially as the countdown to release day grows shorter.

Thalapathy Vijay's film, Jana Nayagan, potentially facing a release date postponement, hinges on a Madras High Court order regarding its certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), with advance bookings opened in some areas but not yet in Tamil Nadu; the production house, KVN Production LLP, had filed a petition seeking a timely censor certificate for the January 9 release.

On Wednesday, the Madras High Court, hearing on the plea seeking a censor certificate, reserved the order and said that it will pronounce the verdict on January 9, the day Jana Nayagan is scheduled to hit the screens.

Even if Jana Nayagan gets a favourable order, the makers might reconsider the release as they have eyed big business through advance booking.

With the Pongal festival still nearly a week away, alternative release dates such as January 12 or 13 might being considered. Given the massive pre-release hype and Vijay's star power, trade analysts believe the film would still secure a strong opening even if it arrives a few days late-provided the censor clearance is obtained in time.

The legal developments over the past few days have added further complexity to the situation. On Tuesday, the Union government informed the Madras High Court that film producers cannot insist on expedited certification merely because a release date has been announced. The submission was made by Additional Solicitor General A R L Sundaresan during the hearing of a petition filed by KVN Production LLP, the production house behind Jana Nayagan.

Earlier in the proceedings, senior advocate Satish Parasaran, appearing for the producers, outlined the timeline of events. He informed the court that the application for certification was submitted on December 18, 2025, and that by December 22, the examining committee had recommended a "UA 16+" certificate, citing brief depictions of religious sentiments and frequent fight sequences. The CBFC suggested certain modifications, which the makers complied with by December 24, after which the film was resubmitted.

On December 29, the producers were informed that the UA 16+ certificate would be granted. However, in a sudden turn, the CBFC communicated on January 5 that the film had been referred to a revising committee due to a complaint received against it. The producers argued that reopening the certification process based on an undisclosed complaint was arbitrary and could severely impact the release plans.

Taking note of the arguments, the court directed the Additional Solicitor General to submit a copy of the complaint and adjourned the matter to Wednesday. Until a final order is passed, Jana Nayagan remains in limbo-leaving fans anxiously waiting to see whether Vijay's swansong will arrive as planned or be pushed to a later date.
