After days of uncertainty and legal hurdles, Jana Nayagan, the much-anticipated Tamil film starring Thalapathy Vijay, is finally back on track. The Madras High Court, in its verdict delivered on Friday (January 9), had directed the CBFC to immediately grant a UA certificate to Jana Nayagan, setting aside the controversial decision to refer the film to a Revising Committee. Justice PT Asha observed that the complaint which triggered the review appeared to be an afterthought and warned that entertaining such objections would encourage a dangerous precedent.

The court categorically stated that once the Examining Committee had recommended a UA certificate and the filmmakers complied with the suggested cuts and modifications, the certification process should have concluded. It also ruled that the CBFC chairperson's letter dated January 6, referring the film for review, was without jurisdiction, and therefore liable to be quashed.

KVN Productions, led by producer Venkata K Narayana, had approached the High Court alleging that the film's certification was being unreasonably withheld, which could lead to severe financial losses given the scale of the project and the buzz surrounding Vijay's next release. The producers informed the court that the Examining Committee had recommended a UA certificate as early as December 22, subject to certain excisions.

After complying with these modifications, the makers resubmitted the film and were informed on December 29 that the UA certificate would be granted. However, the situation took a sudden turn on January 5, when the regional CBFC office emailed them stating that the film had been referred to the Revising Committee following a complaint alleging that certain scenes hurt religious sentiments and misrepresented the armed forces.

Challenging this move, the production house argued that reopening the certification process after approval was against the law. They also contended that a single committee member could not act as a complainant and invalidate the majority decision of the Examining Committee. The High Court accepted this argument, firmly upholding the legal framework governing film certification.

With the verdict now in their favour, the makers are wasting no time in preparing for release. Distribution networks, exhibitors, and theatre owners are reportedly on standby, anticipating a last-minute green signal. Given Vijay's unparalleled fan base and the festive season, trade experts predict a gigantic opening, even with a slightly delayed release.
